YMCA Overnight Camps provide youth the opportunity to learn new skills, gain an appreciation for the outdoors, while experiencing achievement, relationships, and belonging. This role plays an integral role in leading and developing our pathway programs for the journey between camper to staff. Under the guidance of the Director, this position is responsible for developing and leading the LIT, CIT, overnight camp internship, and trips program.

They will be involved in most facets of the summer sessions and will serve an important role in planning and running activities, scheduling, operation and other areas as needed.

During the non-summer months, this position will help support the planning, organization, and preparations for Overnight Camp. These hours are worked remotely.

Availability:
Overnight Camp and training runs between July 5-August 14. Unit Leads are required to live on site during camp training and sessions-all meals, snacks, and lodging are provided during those times. Camp staff receive time off on the weekends and breaks throughout the week.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead camper and staff recruitment for assigned program
  • Teen leadership & outdoor adventure program liaison
  • Develop and plan high-quality camp programming for assigned programs
  • Work directly in ratio to implement planned programming
  • Responsible for the care and safety of the campers and staff
  • Assist in creating a culture in which every child has an exceptional camp experience
  • Assist in the monitoring of the morale of the staff members (sufficient rest, mental health, etc.) and provide guidance to help them self-regulate
  • Staying aware of parental concerns which have been communicated to the camp regarding each camper (eg. eating habits, dietary restrictions, special activity requests, medical issues, social concerns
  • Ensure and lead high quality family communication during the camp sessions including but not limited to: camper’s illness/injuries, behavior supports, communication around incidents, supporting staff in sharing end of week highlights.
  • Co-lead the planning and delivery of staff training through specific training sessions and as general support
  • Provide on camp coaching to help develop the leadership skills of LITs, CITs, and overnight camp interns
  • Enforce the principles and policies as well as the objectives and philosophy of Overnight Camp
  • Be a positive role model to children and staff in your attitude and actions
  • Interact and engage with children in an age and developmentally appropriate manner, and use positive behavior guidance techniques
  • Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies
  • Maintain positive relations with parents and other staff
  • Supports unit staff by observing, coaching, providing feedback, evaluating, and assisting with problem solving.
  • Participates and leads specific areas of staff training
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 21
  • Pre-employment current driver abstract required (available online through Dept. of licensing)
  • Minimum two years driving experience with clean driving record
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
  • Fluency in second language desired
