Job Title: Special Education Para-Educator

School Year Only

Qualifications: High school graduation or equivalent. Must pass the para educator test or possess an AA degree. Ability to work with all age children, school staff, and parents. Interest in working with students with disabilities. Prior experience preferred. Must complete Core Competency Training the first year of employment. Successfully pass background check, including criminal history.

REPORTS TO: Special Education Teacher, Building Principal and/or the Director of Special Education.

JOB GOAL: To provide instructional assistance to students with disabilities.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in the educational and social development of students under the direction and guidance of the facilitator and classroom teachers.
  • Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
  • Work with other professionals, such as speech therapist, social worker, occupational and physical therapists.
  • Support students with emotional or behavior concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills.
  • Prepare materials for student as determined by the special education teacher.
  • Assist in monitoring of students’ daily progress.
  • Provide instructional assistance to students in one-to-one small group settings, within the special education room or regular classroom setting, as assigned.
  • Work with parents of students as seems appropriate by the special education teacher and the Director of Special Education.
  • Provide supervisory duty to students with disabilities during non-instructional times.
  • Assist in self-help skills such as toileting (e.g. diapering, catheterization) and feeding, as necessary and assigned by the special education teacher or Director of Special Education.
  • Correctly position children in a safe and secure manner in adaptive equipment and effectively transfer orthopedically disabled children from wheelchairs to prone standers.
  • Daily implementation and follow-up of therapy plans developed by specialists to meet communication and motor skill goals of students.
  • Supervise students by enforcing safety regulations while riding the bus.
    • Properly fasten in seats when required.
    • See that each child is seated and stays seated.
    • Other safety regulations.
  • Help load and unload students requiring assistance, including wheelchair students.
  • Work cooperatively with parents, staff, and students to coordinate and communicate bus schedules and other information as needed.
  • Cooperate with drivers in filling out reports.
  • Assist with management of children with special health problems or behavior problems, e.g., seizures, attention deficit disorders.
    • Lift and carry 10-50 lbs. frequently.
    • Assist with lifting over 50 lbs. frequently.
    • Provide care to clients in toileting - requires transferring weight skills.
    • Use restraint techniques with clients when necessary.
    • Be able to bend, kneel, squat, twist, turn, and extended arm use involving various weights frequently.
    • Be on feet the majority of the work shift.
    • Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
  • Other duties as assigned by Special Education Director.
  • LIMITS OF AUTHORITY

    Reports to building principal and/or Director of Special Education.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    LENGTH:  School Year Only - 190 contract days include 10 paid holidays. The position is 6.5 hours per day, variable up to 8 hours per day depending on student needs. Contracted days are prorated for mid-year hires.

    SCHEDULE: As assigned by the Director of Special Education and building principal.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS: Determined by experience and college credits, as per state law and local board policy.

    EVALUATION: By the principal and/or the Director of Special Education on/before May 30th each year.
