Para educator - Mainstream Special Education

Position Hours and Pay

This position is for 6.5 hours per day at 178 days per year.

* 7 hours per day for 4 days in the first year and 2 days each year following until certification is completed.

Position pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 – $24.76.

Required Training
  • Must complete Right Response Training within 3–5 months of hire.
Federal Minimum Employment Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Meet one of the following:
    • Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Para‑professional assessment.
    • Earned A.A. degree or higher.
    • Earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an accredited institution.
    • Completion of a registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries.
    • Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program.

Must successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and the General Para educator Certificate of the state‑mandated Para educator Certificate Program (dependent upon state funding).

Job Description
  • Assist certificated staff with instructional and non‑instructional activities for mainstream special education students.
  • Instruct students individually or in small groups, monitor and document behavior and progress.
  • Supervise student activities in classrooms, playgrounds, halls, lunch/breaks, bus boarding areas, field trips and other sites.
  • Assist students with interpersonal and personal skill mastery.
  • Establish effective communication with students, staff, parents and the public.
  • Provide physical assistance to handicapped students when necessary.
  • Monitor need for first aid and refer for treatment as appropriate.
Other Functions
  • Alert qualified district staff to student problems.
  • Locate, prepare and modify materials for student use and enrichment activities.
  • Prepare, duplicate, collate and distribute materials; operate office equipment.
  • Serve on district committees and/or departmental work teams.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the position’s scope.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the school principal and receives guidance from the assigned program administrator, teacher or program specialist.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with school‑age children and special needs students preferred.
  • Associate degree, proof of completion of the Washington State Para educator Assessment, or two years of higher education (Title One and Title One School‑wide Special Education).
    Not applicable for other positions.
    Must successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and the General Para educator Certificate of the state‑mandated Para educator Certificate Program (dependent upon state funding).
Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated skill in reading, writing and communication; knowledge of basic subject areas such as reading and math; ability to deal with students warmly, remain flexible, organize activities, follow instructions, be fair and consistent, and learn behavior and instructional strategies. Knowledge of behavior and learning disorders, student safety rules and procedures, computer use, and general office machine operation. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff.

Requires fingerprinting and background check. Must complete district infection control plan training, obtain first aid and CPR certification if required, and receive hepatitis‑B immunization. May need to be Right Response certified.
