Job Summary
The Shuttle Driver provides safe, reliable, and courteous transportation services for Morgan State University students, faculty, staff, and visitors. By ensuring timely and efficient operation of campus and off-campus shuttle routes, this position directly supports the mission of the Department of Parking & Transportation to enhance mobility, accessibility, and safety across the university community. The role contributes to the department’s commitment to providing sustainable and customer-focused transportation solutions that improve the overall campus experience.

Job Duties Primary Duties
  • Operates specialized medium and heavy duty commercial bus with a gross vehicle weight in excess of 26,000 pounds.
  • Ensures passenger safety at all times and resolves passenger issues.
  • Serves as a representative of the institution by providing quality customer service to the students and by being respectful of the surrounding community.
  • Adheres to assigned bus schedules, follows code of conduct policies and procedures and handles emergency situations while transporting students.
  • Follows all safety regulations in accordance with the Department of Motor Vehicles’ driving regulations and institution specific guidelines.
  • Documents and reports passenger information, fuel and oil consumption, mileage, hourly operation and maintenance activities.
  • Conducts daily and routine safety checks of equipment prior to and during use and assures safe operation.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs minor malfunctions.
  • Responsible for safe transportation of university patrons by way of state approved passenger vehicle.
  • Drive assigned route and schedule, obeying all parking and traffic rules and regulations/ laws in a safe manner. Responsible for payment of traffic violation citations received when driving the shuttle.
  • Consistently perform pre and post trip shuttle inspections. Note any damage or maintenance concerns regarding the shuttle. Record ridership numbers for each shift driven.
  • Remove all loose trash debris from inside the shuttle at the end of the shift.
  • Wipe down driver’s cabin at the end of each shift.
  • Collect and report any passenger items found on bus.
  • Make suggestions to enhance or improve shuttle routes and/or schedules.
  • Properly document and report any shuttle accidents or incidents.
  • Perform other special transportation requests as assigned (departmental, student organization or outside requests).
  • Complete necessary driver trainings as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience
At least two years of experiences in the operation of medium or heavy duty commercial passenger vehicles is required.
A Valid Maryland Commercial Class B Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement is also required.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • General knowledge of the care and operation of motorized equipment.
  • Skill in driving buses in all kinds of weather and road conditions.
  • Ability to read and write; to understand and follow oral and written instructions; and to assist passengers.
  • Ability to problem solve and respond appropriately to a variety of complicated passenger and driving issues.
  • Employees will be subjected to drug and alcohol education and testing as required under Federal Highway Administration and the State of Maryland regulations.
