Position: Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Sidwell Friends School Washington DC

Overview

Sidwell Friends School, a coeducational Quaker day school in Washington, DC, seeks a Part-time Varsity Girls' Basketball Coach. The coach reports to the Athletics Director and is responsible for initiating various aspects of the Basketball Program, including recruiting Sidwell athletes, scheduling opponents, training and coaching the Varsity team, and coaching student-athletes at the middle school level (5th–8th grade). The role also involves participating in the selection and evaluation of seasonal assistant coaches, engaging in professional development, and attending mandatory meetings and community programming.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Represent Sidwell Friends and the girls' basketball program professionally in all activities, including recruitment and coaching, modeling nondiscriminatory practices.

  • Uphold high integrity in team management, fostering a culture aligned with the School’s Quaker values and students’ academic experience, and applying the School’s core values to coaching and program development.

  • Coordinate development and promotion of the girls' basketball program at middle and upper school levels, including coaching the 7th and 8th grade team and teaching 5th and 6th grade rotations during basketball season.

  • Organize and schedule practices; direct individual and small-group activities; assess players’ skills, assign team positions, and determine game strategy following established procedures for injuries/emergencies.

  • Perform other duties during the non-competitive seasons (Fall/Spring) in Physical Education classes and/or as an assistant coach in a secondary sport. Knowledge in other sports is a plus due to involvement in two additional programs with middle school teaching duties.

  • Abide by SFS, Independent School League (ISL), and District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) rules and regulations.

  • Assemble competition schedules and plan overnight trips in accordance with SFS, ISL, and DCSAA policies.

  • Plan, organize, and conduct a preseason meeting with all student-athletes and parents before the first official game.

  • Maintain inventory of all girls’ basketball equipment and uniforms.

  • Daily communication with all stakeholders is a priority for this position.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required;
    Master’s preferred in a related field.

  • 1–3 years of experience as an assistant or head basketball coach at the high school or collegiate level.

  • Demonstrated effective coaching skills, knowledge of rules, regulations, and strategies.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.

  • Available to work nights and weekends.

  • As a condition of employment, the selected candidate must complete and clear a background and fingerprint screening before the first day of work. Upon hire, they will obtain CPR Certification, First Aid training, Bus training (14 passenger), and other requirements immediately.

  • Compensation
    • Stipend: $3,852.00 – $4,839.00. Stipend will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
