The Cost Engineering Team is looking for a Software Engineer II. The engineer is responsible for driving financial visibility, cost efficiency, and long‑term economic sustainability across our cloud infrastructure. We blend engineering, data analysis, and financial insight to ensure that every technical decision upholds availability while preserving cost efficiency.

• With the support of your team’s tech lead and manager, break down larger projects into individual tasks, deliver them in multiple phases, and collaborate with others to ensure timely delivery of your work.
• Support peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design & analytics by participating in ideation, articulating technical constraints, and partnering on decisions that properly consider risks and trade‑offs.
• Support the operations and availability of the team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” and on‑call efforts.
• Contribute to a sense of community on the team by engaging in growth and development activities such as participation in the interview process.

• 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer.
• Experience designing, developing and launching backend systems and proficiency in at least one of Python or Kotlin.
• Familiarity with distributed systems and technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Experience building out cost visibility via tagging and creating cost savings opportunities via cost analysis.
• Ability to translate a business scenario into a solution that interacts with multiple components, writing clear, well‑tested, and extensible code.
• Comfort navigating a large code base, debugging others’ code, and providing feedback through code reviews.
• Ownership of growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
• This position requires either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Pay Grade: L
Equity Grade: 6
Base pay is part of a total compensation package that may include equity rewards, monthly stipends for health, wellness and tech spending, and benefits.
USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT): $160,000 - $210,000 per year.
USA base pay range (all other U.S. states): $142,000 - $192,000 per year.

Affirm is proud to be a remote‑first company! The majority of our roles are remote and you can work almost anywhere within the country of employment.
