this job opening is being used to fill current and future vacant positions in this classification at various shifts, locations and assigned days off.
order of preference: the selection for maintenance and construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: maintenance and construction district, system-wide (l689), authority-wide and external candidates, respectively.
minimum qualifications- graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, and some acceptable training in construction, track repair, inspection or a related field
- twelve (12) months after an employee achieves a particular grade level (i.e. Grades d, c, b, a and aa), he/she shall advance to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed the required written and practical test(s), acquired the applicable certifications and has met the other requirements, including fitness for duty, work record, and job performance requirements.

- possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license
- roadway worker protection (rwp), level two (2) within 90 days; level four (4) after one year in the job and maintained for the duration while in the job

summarythe track walker inspects track and track related components, performs minor repair and maintenance work, skilled and unskilled labor tasks, and uses calibration tools, track gauges, levels and other measuring devices. The work performed ranges from the most routine to the more complex and requires an understanding of maintenance procedures and practices, maintenance theory, and the materials, parts, tools, test equipment, and operating systems associated with wmata track and track components.
job levels: at each successive grade level of this job (i.e., grades d, c, b, a, and aa), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills, and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description.
aa lead level: in addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner.
essential functions- performs flagging, cleaning, lubricating, inspecting, required adjustments, testing, troubleshooting, minor repairs and scheduled maintenance on assigned track section in accordance with wmata track standards, layout, diagrams, schematics, operation manuals, and manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.
- performs scheduled and unscheduled inspections and troubleshoots and tests track and track components using precision measuring equipment such as track levels, track gauges, and other related measuring devices.
- assists individuals in higher classifications in their assignments or provides job specific training to lower classifications
- responds to and assists in snow emergencies and emergencies which require inspection of or repair to track involved in incidents, accidents, or derailments.
- performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines under varying weather conditions.
- work variable shifts, days, and hours as required and as provided for under existing union contract.
- performs all other related duties as required
- attends on-the-job and formal training classes.
- may operate authority vehicles between work locations.
