Overview
Maintenance Mechanic (Seasonal) – Department of the Interior, National Park Service, National Mall and Memorial Parks. These positions will perform complex installation, maintenance and repair of equipment and historic buildings. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is March to December but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty:
March.
- Serve as a Maintenance Mechanic performing difficult installation, maintenance and repair of equipment and historic buildings.
- Perform and oversee a variety of routine preventative maintenance inspections for carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical work.
- Perform repairs related to carpentry, plumbing and painting, with the ability to perform minor electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs.
- Install, modify, and repair new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler system, and showers, and lay out of such things as angles, arcs, and circles.
- Install, overhaul, repair, clean, test, troubleshoot, calibrate, upgrade and modify electrical, electronic and mechanical equipment, circuits and components related to historic buildings.

- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Selected will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- Operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties; a valid driver’s license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record.
- Wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- May be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
- Considered emergency/essential personnel.
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old with one of several education/work options described.
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
- Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT)
- Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair
- Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
- Use of measuring instruments
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
- Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprints)
- Knowledge of materials
