Job Overview

Facilities, Buildings & Grounds (FBG) is currently seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician (FMT) to support the University’s mission in education. Reporting to a Zone Manager, the Facilities Maintenance Technician performs semi‑skilled and sub‑journey work in maintenance, repair, remodeling, alterations, and construction of buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment. The role serves as a general repairer when journey‑level tradespersons are unavailable and may perform skilled work under technical direction in carpentry, plumbing, welding, metal fabrication, steam fitting, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, and machinist duties.

Responsibilities
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs on building fixtures, plumbing, heating, laundry and kitchen equipment, motors, and electrical appliances.
  • Operate automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies.
  • Assist in fabricating equipment and materials in trade shops according to project requirements.
  • Repair windows, doors, screens, floors, floor coverings, and painted surfaces.
  • Perform minor repairs on electrical circuits, steam or waterlines, plumbing fixtures, lights and partitions; clean clogged drains and sewer lines; replace broken windows.
  • Respond to maintenance requests promptly and professionally.
  • Detect and report the need for major maintenance repairs.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and technical documents to locate trouble areas and complete repairs accurately.
  • Operate and maintain building equipment and systems such as vacuum systems, control air systems, building air systems, emergency generators, electrical distribution systems, liquid pumping systems, steam, air handling, hot/cold water systems, and natural gas/fuel oil systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment, buildings, and building systems to ensure safe operation.
  • Provide guidance to staff to ensure work orders are completed accurately and on time.
  • Maintain required record‑keeping.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field (degree must be conferred by the start date). Education, training, and experience may be substituted for a degree if equivalent.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications
  • EPA HVAC certification, CMRT (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician), OSHA safety certificates, and trade licenses required by state or local code.
  • A valid driver’s license and CPR/first aid certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and general building system repair skills.
  • Experience with various hand tools and equipment, mechanical aptitude, and ability to read blueprints or equipment diagrams.
Hiring Range

$21.91 – $28.41 per hour.
