The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA/Metro) is seeking Automotive Service Technicians/Bus Mechanics. Responsibilities include skilled vehicle maintenance such as troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, assembly and/or installation of diesel/compressed natural gas engines, transmissions, electric/pneumatic/hydraulic components, and chassis/vehicle body repairs for WMATA’s bus and automotive fleet.
Position Notes: This job opening is used to fill current and future vacancies in this classification across various shifts, locations, and days off. Responsibilities- Perform skilled vehicle maintenance, including troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, assembly and/or installation of engines, transmissions, and large and small electric/pneumatic/hydraulic components.
- Repair and overhaul chassis and vehicle body components for bus and automotive fleets; participate in operation, maintenance and repair of WMATA vehicles and equipment.
- Adhere to safety procedures and maintenance standards; complete required documentation and reports using appropriate forms and tags.
- Respond to emergencies and support WMATA objectives (e.g., fire/life/safety, snow events) as needed.
- Work may involve heavy physical labor; may be required to work various hours, locations, and days as assigned.
- Education
:
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). - Experience
:- Level D:
Two (2) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience. - Level C:
Three (3) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience. - Level B:
Four (4) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience. - Level A:
Five (5) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience. - Level AA:
Six (6) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience.
- Level D:
- Certification/Licensure
:- Technical Certification/Licenses in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or MOSC for Military experience in related field.
- Satisfactorily pass all required ASE and WMATA certification tests following new hire training.
- Valid Class B CDL or CDL Learner’s Permit (for Level D new hires) with endorsements; subject to driving record limits.
- Valid Class A CDL within 90 calendar days of promotion/appointment with required endorsements (Passenger bus, Air Brake, tow truck).
- Intra-State CDL with Passenger, Air Brake and tow truck endorsements accepted with provisional appointment until age 21.

Additional qualifications listed (ASE, MOSC, education or training) as applicable to job level. - Levels C, B, A, AA:
Current ASE certifications in relevant fields; other listed qualifications per level.
