Job Overview
The George Washington University Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals for the position of Police Detective. The GW Police Department is responsible for providing primary law enforcement and public safety service to a diverse university population of 25,000 students, faculty, and staff across two urban campuses located in Washington, D.C. The Detective is part of The George Washington University Police Department and is responsible for conducting assigned criminal investigations for the University Police Department and ensures federal compliance efforts are maintained by the department. The Detective participates in detailed special investigations related to crimes committed at the University while following existing departmental procedures and investigative techniques to ensure compliance with DC laws and ordinances and administrative policies and procedures.
Responsibilities include reviewing police reports, directing personnel at crime scenes and controlling the scene to protect evidence, maintaining the crime log and maintenance of investigative files and reports. This position provides analysis and recommendations for new procedures and approaches related to security and loss prevention within the University community.
The Detective will work with the Metropolitan Police Department and other allied agencies to maximize investigatory potential. The Detective reports directly to the Police Sergeant, Investigations Unit within The George Washington University Police Department.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum QualificationsQualified candidates will hold a High School Diploma/ GED plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses / Certifications- Must possess and maintain a District of Columbia Special Police Commission and meet the prescribed requirements and qualifications associated with commission to include weapon systems.
- Prior to employment, the final candidate will need to successfully complete a physical, drug screen, and psychological examination, which has been approved by the GW Police Department.
- Must have a valid driver's license and be eligible to drive GW vehicles as per University Policy for the entire duration of employment within this role.
- Proof of U.S. citizenship and at least 21 years of age as required by the MPD SOMB.
- Previous experience conducting criminal investigations is desirable.
