Pre-hire InformationWe re excited to share that the recruitment process includes a written examination during the background evaluation phase. The requirement will be waived for lateral police officers, military veterans, and anyone with a four-year college degree.
Physical Agility Test RequirementsApplicants should be prepared for the Physical Agility assessment. Details are as follows:
- Complete a 1.5-mile run in 17 minutes and 54 seconds
- Do 12 push-ups in 1 minute
- Complete 23 sit-ups in 1 minute

Minimum QualificationsEducation

Note: May be advanced to the next grade level provided the candidate has taken and passed required tests, acquired certifications, and meets fitness, work record, and job performance requirements.
- Level TP I
- Must be at least 21 years old on date of appointment. This is the entry level.
- Level TP II
- Two (2) years of experience as a Metro Transit Police Officer I or related role
- Level TP III
- Five (5) years of experience as a Metro Transit Police Officer I & II, or related role
Certification/Licensure
- Valid driver s license from the jurisdiction of residence
Medical Group: Satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position, if required. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Mission Essential Designation:
- In accordance with WMATA s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP), this job is identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents may be required to report to or continue to work during severe events.
The Metro Transit Police Officer protects life, safety and welfare of transit patrons and employees, enforces laws and regulations, investigates crimes on properties owned, controlled, or operated by the Authority, and protects Authority revenue. The incumbent serves as a sworn police officer with full apprehension and arrest powers throughout the Transit zone and must obtain and maintain police certification in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.
This position requires a substantial element of personal risk and a tactful, conscientious, and efficient performance of duties under minimal supervision.
Job Levels: At each successive grade level (8722 TPI, 8723 TP II, 8724 TP III), incumbents are expected to demonstrate increased proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities.
Essential Functions- Investigates crimes or incidents, preserves evidence, identifies witnesses, and protects the crime scene pending arrival of investigators and supervisors.
- Responds to police matters, disasters and emergencies; performs rescue functions; may act as On-Scene Commander until a higher-ranking official arrives.
- Assists transit patrons with information and emergency first aid, including CPR; patrols facilities to ensure order and prevent crime.
- Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with hostile individuals.
- Restrains suspects using appropriate force as necessary and uses restraints in self-defense.
- Pursues fleeing suspects and performs rescue operations, including rapid entry/exit of secured areas and physical tasks as needed.
- Performs searches of people, vehicles, and areas to ensure security; conducts patrols and inspections.
