Field Training Officer

Children's National Hospital

The Field Training Officer (FTO) will provide on‑the‑job training (OJT) and mentor new officers post initial training for a prescribed period of time. Ongoing mentoring, enforcement of training objectives, written assessments, shift operations oversight, physical security, emergency response, and proactive identification of risks are core responsibilities.

Pay Range: $45,614.40 – $76,024.00 per year

Responsibilities
  • Mentor and continue on‑the‑job training with new officers.
  • Provide a detailed written assessment for the officer’s progress and suitability for independent assignment.
  • As authorized, oversee shift operations.
  • Ensure that applicable policies, procedures and directives are followed during emergencies.
  • Effectively de‑escalate disruptive behavior.
  • Remain in control of emotions and not take 'acting out behavior' exhibited by others personally.
  • Write accurate, grammatically correct incident reports; conduct thorough initial investigations; obtain statements from witnesses for criminal and other noteworthy events; follow up on initial reports for additional information.
  • Preserve evidence and crime scene in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Ensure that all noteworthy events are properly recorded in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and that dispositions of all emergency response incidents are thoroughly recorded in the dispatch notes.
  • Conduct a thorough inventory of security equipment at the beginning and end of each shift; report any broken or damaged equipment immediately.
  • Process all lost and found items in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Speak up when team members exhibit unsafe behavior or performance.
  • Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation.
  • Stop in the face of uncertainty, take time to resolve the situation.
  • Demonstrate accurate, clear and timely verbal and written communication.
  • Actively promote safety for patients, families, visitors and co‑workers.
  • Attend carefully to important details – practicing Stop, Think, Act and Review in order to self‑check behavior and performance.
  • Diligently monitor all video monitoring systems and act immediately upon observed activity that could compromise security.
  • Take appropriate action during duress alarm incidents; dispatch officers accordingly.
  • Place the building in 'lock‑down' mode for Code Pink and Code Purple incidents.
  • Answer all telephone calls within three rings and meet departmental telephone etiquette expectations.
  • Obtain complete and accurate information for service and emergency calls received in the SOC.
  • Process off‑site intrusion alarm activations in accordance with departmental policy and management expectations.
  • Partner in the mission and uphold core principles of the organization.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Minimum

Work Experience:

5 years of security or law enforcement experience and an active commission as a special police officer in the District of Columbia.

  • 7 years security or law enforcement experience (preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Can lift 50 pounds.
  • Can climb hotel stairs to the heliport in under two minutes.
  • Can walk/run a mile in ten minutes.
  • Can work in secluded areas.
  • Can maintain the confidentiality of information.
