NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations.

Today, our team of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Beijing;
Chicago;
New Delhi;
New York;
San Francisco;
Santa Monica; and Washington, D.C.

NRDC is seeking a Senior Fellow, Superpollutants, to work with the Industry team in our San Francisco, Washington, D.C., or NY office.

Position Summary

NRDC is seeking to hire a two-year senior fellow in our Climate & Energy team to help lead NRDC’s domestic efforts to phase down the super-pollutants called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and support our international engagement under the Montreal Protocol in San Francisco, New York, or Washington, D.C. The employee will develop deep knowledge of HFCs or refrigerant-related policies and programs in U.S. states and abroad, the science and engineering behind key aspects of HFC replacement, and will be able to flexibly address other issues related to other climate super pollutants like methane, nitrous oxide, and other fluorinated greenhouse gases.

The employee will work cross-functionally with a top team of lawyers, engineers, analysts and advocates to support policy development in these areas.

This is a limited term 2 year position.

The position you are applying for is part of the bargaining unit represented by The Washington Baltimore News Guild (WBNG / The Newsguild-CWA Local 32035).

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and policy expertise to U.S. states developing and implementing HFC policies, both regulatory and incentive-based programs
  • At the federal level, support engagement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on regulatory actions to phase down the production and consumption of HFCs; reduce demand for HFCs in new equipment; and better manage HFCs from the existing installed base of HFC-using equipment
  • Support NRDC’s engagement with the Montreal Protocol as it phases down HFCs and more
  • Work with industry leaders and trade groups to promote state and local adoption of safety standards and building codes that allow use of low and near-zero warming HFC alternatives
  • Work with NRDC’s international partner organizations on analyses and publications
  • Assist in building out NRDC’s work on methane, nitrous oxide and other climate super pollutants
  • Work collaboratively with other NRDC teams to support cohesive and holistic policy approaches that integrate HFCs and other super pollutants into strategies for building decarbonization

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in a science, engineering, or other quantitative field with interest in climate policy development, analysis, and advocacy. Ph.D., M.S. preferred
  • 7 or more years of experience related to development or implementation of climate policy in the United States;
    Strong preference for experience related to HFCs, or other super pollutants
  • 7 or more years of relevant experience developing and demonstrating key knowledge and skills:
    • Ability to analyze complex, multi-dimensional problems and make actionable recommendations
    • Ability to review, distill and summarize scientific and technical research for both technical and non-technical audiences
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple work streams
  • Excellent verbal communication, strong writing, and confident presentation skills
  • Diplomacy and relationship-building skills to interact with peers in government, other non-profits, and the business community
