Post Doctoral Associate – Empirical Approaches to Legal Interpretation
Georgetown Initiative on Technology and Society (GITS) seeks a Postdoctoral Fritz Research Fellow to conduct research in Washington, DC in the emerging area of empirical approaches to legal interpretation. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, or a related field and bring expertise in linguistic and/or computational methodologies that can apply to the study of legal interpretation.
The fellowship is a one academic year and summer (August 1, 2025 – July 31, 2026). Fellows receive a stipend (range $,000 – $90,000), a $5,000 research fund, health‑insurance coverage, and workspace. This is an in‑person position in Washington, DC.
The fellow will lead collaborative research initiatives, producing datasets, software, scholarly publications, and public‑facing contributions. The position will be housed within the research group of Prof. Nathan Schneider (Departments of Computer Science and Linguistics) with additional mentorship by Prof. Kevin Tobia (GU Law Center). Fellows join a cohort of Fritz Family Fellows ranging from undergraduate students through postdoctoral fellows and engage in co‑mentorship of research students and co‑development of grant proposals.

The projected salary for this position is $70,000 – $90,000. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
