The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non‑profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 that provides strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision‑makers concerned with global security and prosperity. CSIS has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of about 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working across international security dynamics.
The Critical Minerals Security Program seeks to provide evidence‑based thought leadership to develop innovative and sensible policy solutions to reduce supply chain vulnerabilities for key minerals. The Program is seeking a Research Associate to advance our research and policy agenda at the intersection of critical minerals and national, economic and energy security. The Research Associate will play an important role in managing the program’s operations, including overseeing budgeting, event management, and publications.
The annual salary range for this position is $60,000 – $65,000. Salary and title are based on the level of experience and expertise of the chosen candidate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Research and contribute to commentaries, analysis, and reports; prepare project‑related research products (including multimedia); and contribute to collaborative research and writing tasks.
- Utilize quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, including large‑scale datasets, to undertake novel analysis.
- Prepare and execute CSIS and external workshops, events, and podcasts.
- Contribute to the thought leadership and strategic direction of the program.
- Contribute to multiple collaborative research projects.
- Represent the Program and the Director at meetings, workshops, and public or private events.
- Develop work plans and timelines for research projects and coordinate both internal and outside experts to execute them on schedule.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- 2–4 years of related experience in critical minerals research.
- Superior communication skills, good judgment, and ability to anticipate needs.
- Excellent organization, time management, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, in a team, and closely with a range of individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Ability to multi‑task and operate in a fast‑paced environment.
This position will be based out of our Washington, DC headquarters. The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee working in an office environment.
