Surgical Care Unit is a 31-bed surgical/trauma unit with cardio/pulmonary monitoring for each bed. The unit focuses on family-centered nursing care for patients with surgical conditions, including orthopedic conditions from infancy through adolescence. Primary patient subgroups include Burns, Trauma, Pediatric General Surgery, ENT, Reconstructive Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic trauma, Spina Bifida, Spinal fusion, Bariatric Surgery.

All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children’s National policies and procedures, and applicable laws and regulations. The Professional Model of Care requires registered professional nurses to be responsible and accountable for their own practice. Children’s National supports the development of RN relationships within the community to support the health and well-being of the community at large.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • BSN (preferred) from an approved school of nursing.
  • 1 year RN experience (required).
Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Knowledge of current nursing practice and ability to maintain knowledge base with changes in the specialty area.
  • Successfully complete hospital and nursing orientation at Children’s National.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nurse license in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia depending on practice location (required).
  • CPR certification (required).

  • Contribute to Magnet redesignation through professional development activities and community outreach.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving during patient care.
  • Communicate to develop care plans and advocate for patients’ needs.
  • Escalate issues using the chain of command when needed.
  • Use current hand-off processes and maintain collegial relationships with staff.
  • Support management decisions and model empathetic, patient-centered care.

  • Maintain regulatory requirements (license, BLS).
  • Attend mandatory education and professional activities to enhance nursing practice.
  • Participate in peer reviews and contribute to departmental goals while adhering to safety standards.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team and demonstrate professional behavior and teamwork.
  • Know when to escalate to the next level of care.
Exemplary Professional Practice
  • Use patient and family data to complete assessments and plans of care within identified time frames.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills with complex patients; reflect on patient status and interventions.
  • Prioritize and organize care for patients with rapidly changing needs.
  • Maintain high-quality documentation and prepare patients and families for discharge.
