Radiology Nurse – Children’s National Hospital

Work schedule:

Day, four 10‑hour blocks.

Location:

District of Columbia, Washington, DC. Work locations: CN Hospital (Main Campus).

Full‑time salary range: $75,108.80 – $ per year. Sign‑on bonus up to $25,000.00.

Responsibilities & Functional Accountabilities
  • Radiology Sedation Nursing encompasses care of the patient and family/legal guardian. Pre‑sedation, sedation, monitoring, and post‑sedation services are provided for a range of ages from infants to adults.
  • The Radiology Sedation Nurse is responsible for the sedation needs of the patient in collaboration with anesthesiologists and radiologists.
  • Provide care for an acute and critically ill patient population during radiology exams and procedures, collaborating with the radiology team to facilitate patient flow through scheduled exams or procedures.
  • Patient care activities include: peripheral and central line access, contrast administration, urinary catheterizations, assessing/triaging phone consults and requests, pre‑procedure patient and family education, and support during the exam or procedure.
  • Support nursing lead on safety and emergency equipment checks and regulatory compliance responsibilities.

  • Contribute to Magnet re‑designation by independent involvement or leadership in committees, task forces, and/or community outreach.
  • Model critical thinking skills by problem‑solving patient care and unit/system issues.
  • Demonstrate communication that reflects development of plan of care and ability to advocate to meet patients’ needs; make suggestions for resolution of system issues.
  • Demonstrate proper use of hand‑off processes; follow up on inconsistent practice related to handoff.
  • Maintain collegial and respectful relationships with peers, physicians, and other departments.
  • Lead change implementation and support management decisions.

  • Independently lead patient care sedation activities to ensure patient safety during radiology exams or procedures.

  • Maintain regulatory requirements (license, BLS).

  • Champion adherence to national safety standards and service excellence standards; promote education and certification.
  • Coordinate involvement of the healthcare team and model professional behavior and teamwork with co‑workers.

Exemplary Professional Practice
  • Analyze assessment data gathered from patient and family to ensure completion of database and plan of care within identified time frames, working collaboratively with radiology and anesthesia teams.
  • Model excellent clinical skills with complex patients; care reflects analysis of patient status and appropriate interventions related to sedation activities and recovery phases.
  • Prioritize and organize for complex patients with rapidly changing needs, including outpatient, acute care, critically ill, and emergency department patients.
  • Document with adherence to the highest standards of practice.
  • Anticipate and proactively plan for educational needs; verify with patients and families throughout the hospital/outpatient stay and prior to discharge.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills, adjust for changes, and complete assignments on time to facilitate scheduled patients efficiently.
  • Model caring in all encounters with patients and families, evidenced by feedback and increased patient satisfaction scores.
  • Communicate and educate patients and families with clear expectations of outcomes for pre‑sedation, sedation, post‑sedation, and scheduled radiology exams or procedures.

  • Initiate ways to improve operations through quality improvement and implement related solutions.
  • Serve as a resource for current, new information or changes in specialty area.
