Overview

The George Washington University Hospital Emergency Department (ED) provides comprehensive care for patients with acute medical conditions, trauma, and critical illnesses. As a Level I Trauma Center, the ED is equipped to handle the most complex emergency cases with 24/7 specialized teams.

The ED is a 62-bed unit with resuscitation rooms, fast-track areas, and spaces for trauma, cardiac emergencies, and stroke. It is supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities with rapid access to radiology, laboratory, and surgical services. The ED is staffed by board-certified emergency physicians, nurse practitioners, and a highly skilled team of emergency-trained nurses. The focus is on delivering immediate, patient-centered care while ensuring seamless transitions and long-term outcomes through collaboration with other specialties.

Job Summary

As a Registered Nurse in our Level I Trauma Center Emergency Department, you will provide critical care to patients with urgent and life-threatening conditions. The ED is known for its fast-paced environment and commitment to excellence in patient care, teaching, and research. You will work with a dedicated team of medical professionals to deliver high-quality care and support to patients and their families during critical times.

Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients in a dynamic, challenging emergency department setting.
  • Perform assessments, develop treatment plans, and implement care for patients across a wide range of conditions.
  • Administer medications, perform procedures, and monitor patient responses to treatments.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment plans, and preventive care.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and research opportunities.

Qualifications
  • BSN or currently enrolled
  • DC RN License, or eligibility
  • At least 1 year of clinical experience in an emergency department or critical care setting is preferred
  • Certification in BLS, ACLS, and PALS required
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification within 1 year of hire
  • Exceptional clinical skills and judgment
  • Strong ability to work under pressure and react effectively in emergency situations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
