Overview

Operating Room Registered Nurse.

Schedule:

Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. with call.

Location:

Responsibilities
  • Consults and coordinates with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate intraoperative patient care plans.
  • Serves as the communication liaison to patients, families, and members of the operating team.
  • Prepares the operation room for the patient and the surgical procedure. Assembles equipment, supplies and implants, and ensures equipment is functional, and supplies and implants are available.
  • Delivers perioperative patient and family centered care incorporating the nursing process while providing developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence based care.
  • Utilizes outcome data at the patient level to make care decisions.
  • Participates in the quality improvement activities and uses quality measures to understand individual and unit performance.
  • Provides direct guidance and oversight of the orientee in all patient care and clinical activities and ensures that those behaviors adhere to documentation standards, standards of care, and policies and procedures.
  • Participates in unit shared governance initiatives to improve patient care and throughput as determined by leadership.
  • Navigates and documents in the EMR to support patient care.
  • Works within scope of practice and delegates according to Nurse Practice Act.
Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
  • Minimum Education
    :
    Associate's degree or BSN. Graduated from an approved school of nursing. (Required). BSN preferred.
  • Minimum Work Experience
    : 2 years of operating room experience required; 2 years' experience in at least two of the following specialties:
    Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Orthopedics-Spine, General Surgery, Colorectal, ENT, DaVinci Robotic, Kidney transplant. Pediatric OR experience preferred.
  • Required Skills/Knowledge
    :
    Completion of hospital and nursing orientation at Children’s National. Strong organizational skills, adaptability, and ability to complete assignments on time. Proficiency in at least three or more of the following service areas:
    General Surgery, Colorectal, Kidney Transplant, ENT, Ortho/Ortho-spine, Neurosurgery, Cardiac Surgery, Urology/DaVinci-Robotic, Plastic, Oral Maxillofacial, GI. Basic computer skills and ability to learn new technologies.
  • Ability to adapt to changes, collaborate with others, and demonstrate effective communication (written and verbal) with patients, families, and team members. Commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workforce.
  • Decision making, relationship management, task management, and patient safety focus with attention to detail.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nurse in the District of Columbia (or multi-state licensure as required by practice location).
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) – Required.
  • Certified Nurse OR (CNOR) – Preferred.
Functional Accountabilities
  • Functions as an Operating Room Nurse within the surgical team for intraoperative care.
  • Communicates with patients, families, and operating room staff; ensures readiness of the room, equipment, supplies, and implants.
  • Maintains patient safety, uses universal protocols, and documents care in the EMR; supports continuity of care and evidence-based practice.
