Unit OverviewThe Surgical Care Unit is a 31‑bed surgical/trauma unit with cardio/respiratory monitoring capability for each bed. It delivers family‑centered nursing care for pediatric patients from infancy to adolescence. Key patient groups include:
Burns, Trauma, Pediatric General Surgery, ENT, Reconstructive Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic trauma, Spina bifida, Spinal fusion, Bariatric Surgery.
- All nursing practice follows legal scope, national and specialty standards, and Children’s National policies.
- Registered nurses are responsible and accountable for their own practice and develop RN relationships within the community.
- BSN from an approved nursing school (preferred).
- 1 year of RN experience (required).
- Registered Nurse license in District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia (required).
- Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
- Contribute to Magnet re‑designation by updating professional profiles, initiating council participation, and community outreach.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and problem‑solving during patient care.
- Advocate and communicate plans of care effectively.
- Escalate issues using the chain of command and utilize hand‑off processes.
- Model empathy, collegiality, and professional teamwork.
- Maintain regulatory requirements, plan mandatory education, and collaborate with team members.
- Utilize resources, recognize when to escalate, and support departmental goals.
- Ensure thorough assessment data usage, prioritization, and adaptive organization for rapid change.
- Maintain accurate documentation, anticipate educational needs, and promote patient satisfaction.
- Speak up about unsafe behaviors, verify decision information, and practice safety protocols.
- Identify operational improvements via quality work and evidence‑based care.
- Show commitment to organizational mission, diversity, integrity, and confidentiality.
- Anticipate customer needs and pursue resolutions.
