PRN | Rotating Shifts

The PICU at Children’s National is a 46-bed unit with planned expansion to 60 beds in 2027. It is a regional referral center and a designated Level I Trauma Center for pediatric patients and their families. Care is provided by pediatric intensivists and specialty nurses alongside multiple services within the Medical Center. Patients are admitted from the ED, Trauma Services, Operating Room, and transfers from in-house units or other institutions via the Pediatric Transport team.

The unit includes trauma, burn, and various subspecialty care, with services provided 24/7.

Responsibilities

The department utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to care, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, social services, and other support services. The PICU provides rapid response and Code Blue leadership to support clinical emergencies. An attending or fellow, along with an ICU nurse and Respiratory Therapist, responds to assist in rescues. This service can be activated by a concerned parent. Shift coordination and planning with unit leadership ensure continuity of care and evaluation of unit-based clinical care.

Functional accountabilities include:

  • Contribute to Magnet re-designation through updating professional profile and participating in councils, committees, task forces, and community outreach.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving during patient care.
  • Communicate to develop and advocate for the plan of care.
  • Escalate issues using the chain of command when needed.
  • Use appropriate hand-off processes and maintain professional relationships with staff.
  • Participate in implementing changes and support management decisions.
  • Model empathetic, patient- and family-centered care.
Qualifications

Minimum Education
BSN from an approved nursing program. (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
2 years RN experience (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
The RN will complete hospital and nursing orientation and maintain an up-to-date knowledge base with changes in the specialty area.

Required Licenses and Certifications
RN license in the District of Columbia, licensed in DC, Maryland, or Virginia depending on practice location. CPR required.
