Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Mentor a teen in foster care. Change the future.

Overview

Family & Youth Initiative (DCFYI) helps older children (ages 12 to 21) in foster care find adoptive families and build lasting connections with caring adults. We focus on helping teens at risk of aging out of foster care find adoptive families and develop lasting relationships with other caring adults. We offer opportunities for adults who are not yet approved to adopt or mentor to meet and get to know teens so that relationships can grow naturally before any formal match.

What

we do

We are one of very few organizations that create low-barrier ways for adults to get to know and help teens in foster care. We encourage creative responses to the needs of individual teens and the abilities and availability of interested adults. Family & Youth Initiative mentors change the lives of children ages 12 to 21 in foster care.

Through sharing new experiences, having fun, and being a consistent caring presence, mentors help teens gain confidence, make wise choices, and have greater hopefulness for the future. DCFYI mentors change lives!

What we offer
  • Training and support
  • Fun monthly activities for participating teens and adults
  • A wonderful community of adults and teens who genuinely care for and support each other
Mentor commitments
  • Spend at least eight hours a month with their mentees
  • Make a two-year commitment to their mentee, once matched, because these are teens who need lasting relationships
  • Do reports on time spent with their mentee
  • Keep current on required background clearances
Target population and placement

We work with children 12 to 21 who are in DC foster care waiting for adoptive families. DCFYI teens are placed in foster homes across the area (mostly in DC and Prince George’s County).

Matching and events

We make natural matches between mentors and mentees. Adults and teens get to know each other at DCFYI monthly events. We make mentoring matches based on the relationships that form at the events and with the express interest of both the adult and the teen.
