Job Summary

The Manager of Proposal and Grant Writing serves as a key member of Truth Initiative’s Development team, responsible for crafting compelling written materials that support fundraising efforts. This position focuses on writing and submitting grant applications and drafting proposals for corporate, foundation, and other institutional prospects. In addition, the Manager will lead the creation and maintenance of high-quality Development collateral—such as cases for support, one‑pagers, pitch decks, and proposal templates—and will work cross‑departmentally to ensure consistent and persuasive messaging.

The Manager of Proposal and Grant Writing also supports internal reporting, providing timely updates on Development activities to senior leadership and ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Grant & Proposal Development
    • Research, write, edit, and submit high‑quality grant applications, letters of inquiry, and proposals to corporate, foundation, and institutional funders.
    • Tailor content to match funder priorities while ensuring alignment with Truth Initiative’s mission and programs.
    • Track submission deadlines and deliverables, ensuring all materials are submitted on time and meet funder requirements.
  • Development Collateral Creation
    • Lead the development, design, and maintenance of Development communications materials, including case statements, one‑pagers, pitch decks, proposal templates, and stewardship reports.
    • Collaborate with program, communications, marketing and finance teams to gather information, stories, and data that strengthen Development materials.
    • Ensure consistent messaging, branding, and tone across all Development communications.
  • Cross‑Departmental Coordination
    • Serve as the primary liaison between the Development team and other departments to source content, metrics, and impact data for proposals and collateral.
    • Support the preparation of presentations and materials for donor meetings, board updates, and external events.
  • Reporting & Analytics
    • Compile and deliver regular updates on Development activities, funding pipelines, and outcomes to senior leadership.
    • Maintain accurate records in the donor database and generate reports as needed.
    • Support the creation of impact reports and funder stewardship communications.
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Assist in shaping the organization’s overall fundraising messaging and storytelling strategies.
    • Support the Managing Director and senior leadership with other Development communications projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, nonprofit management, public health, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 5+ years of professional experience in grant writing, proposal development, or related nonprofit development communications roles.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to translate complex programs into compelling narratives.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple deadlines and projects simultaneously.
  • Strong understanding of fundraising best practices and the corporate/foundation funding landscape.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with donor databases (e.g., Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce).
  • Collaborative mindset with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work cross‑functionally.
  • High attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to maintain consistent branding and messaging.
  • Commitment to Truth Initiative’s mission to achieve a culture where young people reject tobacco, vaping, and nicotine use.
Additional Information

This position is based in Washington, D.C. with a hybrid work schedule of three days in the office and two telework days.

Compensation Package

The salary range for this role is starting at $85,000-$90,000 on a national basis. Individual pay decisions are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to qualifications for the role, relevant work experience, skillset, internal equity, location, and certifications, consistent with applicable law. Salary is just one part of our total rewards package which additionally includes performance bonus for eligible roles, and competitive benefits.
