The OpportunityThe Director of Strategic Communications is a high-impact, player-coach leadership role at the intersection of public affairs, advocacy, and enterprise communications.
This role will serve as MEMA’s public affairs communications strategist and operational lead, working in close collaboration with the government affairs team to help advance the association’s policy priorities through compelling messaging, disciplined execution, and strong external positioning.
Partnering closely with the Corporate Vice President, Strategy & Communications and the Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, you will shape how MEMA shows up in the policy ecosystem, guiding communications that influence decision-makers, elevate member priorities, and reinforce MEMA’s leadership across the mobility landscape.
What You’ll Do- Lead strategic communications planning that supports MEMA’s advocacy and policy agenda.
- Develop and execute integrated communications that advance key public affairs priorities.
- Craft messaging and materials including statements, advocacy content, and thought leadership.
- Serve as a trusted advisor on policy positioning, external narrative, and communications risk.
- Mentor and lead a team of communications professionals, driving clarity, accountability, and strategic partnership. Create a culture of trust, collaboration, and high performance.

What You’ll Bring- 7 years of experience in strategic communications, public affairs, government relations, or policy-driven messaging.
- Bachelor s degree in political science, communications or business administration, or related field.
- Beltway experience is required (e.g., Capitol Hill, administration, trade association, advocacy organization, or political communications).
- Proven success leading a high performing team as a player-coach while cultivating a high trust, collaborative, and mission-driven culture.
- Strong strategic judgment with the confidence to make decisions and enforce priorities.
- Familiarity with automotive, manufacturing, mobility, or other regulated industries is a plus.
- Passion for MEMA’s mission, vision, and member impact.
This position is a hybrid role based in Washington, DC or Southfield, MI. The salary range for this role is $125,000 to $140,000, based on experience and qualifications.
