Overview
Job Summary This position is located in the DC Department of Corrections (DOC). The Deputy Warden provides oversight for planning, organizing, leading, directing and controlling of major programs such as security, rehabilitation, compliance, support services, and operations in the DOC. This position functions as a member of the facility’s management team. Decision making is mission critical and has substantial impact to the overall risk reduction and risk control operations for the department and the citizens of Washington, DC.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Administers and manages service provisions related to the safe, secure, clean and humane facility conditions.
- Engages in programs and initiatives to further the institution's relationship with the community.
- Oversees, directs, establishes, and evaluates Correctional Officer posts, staffing levels through the rank of Majors, and non-union support staff to ensure adequate staffing is maintained to support the safety, security, and effective operation of the facility for staff and inmates.
- Ensures the armory operations (weapons, ammunition storage, issuance, repairs and cleaning), construction, drug testing, contraband control, training coordination and updates are in compliance with policy and national expected practices.
- Oversees inmate work details, entry points for inmates, staff and visitors, surrounding perimeters monitoring, visitation, and inmate drug testing to ensure the safety and security of the facility staff and inmates.
- Provides direct supervision and leadership to the Majors, administrative, and other subordinate staff in showing performance meets standards.
- Conducts employee performance evaluations, establishes and promotes employee morale.
- Participates in the selection, hiring and promotion of employees.
- Initiates and participates in the employee disciplinary process as well as counseling and correcting performance problems.
- Participates in policy leadership discussions to achieve Departmental goals and guide operational decisions and resource allocation.
- Undergraduate and Graduate
Education:
Major study — correctional administration, criminology, psychology, social work, sociology, or other fields related to the position. - OR
- The incumbent must have demonstrated the ability to perform supervisory or administrative duties successfully. This includes (1) understanding the problems of custody, treatment, training, and release of inmates of penal or correctional institutions; (2) a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of an institution's internal policies, programs, regulations, and procedures; and (3) training subordinates, coordinating and directing activities and functions, evaluating performance of operations and the effectiveness of programs, and maintaining high standards of work objectives.
- AND Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the line of progression.
- LICENSES AND
CERTIFICATIONS:
Incumbent must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR). - Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license during employment.
Work is performed in a Correctional Institution. Ability to provide leadership and direction in a supervisory capacity and team-based environment. Ability to work under tight time constraints/pressure related to facility operations. Work is often accomplished under conditions of great stress and limited time for the applications of guides in the decision making process. Incumbent is subject to twenty-four (24) hour call back or return to duty.
