The Chief Financial & Administrative Officer (CFAO) is a key strategic partner to the CEO, Executive Team and the Board of Directors, responsible for the integrated strategic leadership of the organization's Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology (IT), Legal, Compliance and Facilities functions. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned and hands-on leader who can balance high-level strategic planning with day-to-day operational execution, ensuring compliance, promoting efficiency, and fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
They are an institutionalist who brings experience leading successful organizational change initiatives in technology and infrastructure.
Strategic Collaboration and Leadership:
- Serve as an integral member of the executive leadership team, partnering with them to set organizational goals and objectives and develop integrated strategies to achieve those goals.
- Provide financial insights and support data-driven decision-making and resource allocation with the executive leadership team.
- Efficiently and effectively deploy administrative resources from across the administrative departments to align with and support organizational plans.
- Design, update and ensure effective implementation of administrative policies, procedures and systems that support the organization’s mission and long-term goals.
- Foster cross-functional collaboration and communication throughout the organization, leading business operations and translating complex financial information for non-financial stakeholders.
- Lead all compliance functions.
- Promote professional development and a culture of accountability and transparency.
Financial Leadership and Management
- Ensure the adequacy and operational effectiveness of financial policies, procedures, systems and internal controls.
- Develop and implement long-term financial strategies, plans, and forecasts to ensure the organization's financial health and long-term sustainability.
- Develop and implement plans to mitigate financial risk.
- Lead the annual budgeting process.
- Regularly report on financial performance, position, risks, opportunities and insights to the Board of Directors and executive leadership.
Administrative and Operational Oversight:
- Oversee risk management strategies, including organizational insurance needs (e.g., liability, Directors and Officers, cyber insurance) and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and organizational policies.
- Provide strategic direction for Human Resources policies, practices, and systems (including compensation, benefits, recruitment, and talent management), ensuring compliance with employment laws and fostering a culture of belonging and high-performance.
- Lead IT strategy, which includes infrastructure, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data governance through an organization-wide transformation. Ensure effective and secure use of information and technology.
- Oversee facilities operations, real estate decisions, leases, and procurement processes, ensuring a safe and efficient work environment.
- Minimum 15 years of experience in financial management and administration, with significant experience in a senior leadership role within a nonprofit setting (preferably with an annual budget exceeding $40 million).
- Deep knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, fund and grant accounting, and compliance requirements specific to the nonprofit sector.
- Proven experience managing multi-functional teams and departments that include Finance, People and Culture/Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal, Compliance and Facilities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with experience working effectively with diverse stakeholders, including the Board of Directors, funders, and staff.
- Track record of managing organizational growth and change management.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to think strategically and translate vision into an operational model.
- High integrity, discretion, and commitment to the mission and values of the organization.
- Certified Public Accountant or Master of Business Administration required.
