Summary
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is unique in its size and scope. It serves as both the local and federal prosecutor for the nation’s capital. AUSAs assigned to the Superior Court Division prosecute D.C. Code offenses ranging from misdemeanors to homicides. AUSAs assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute a broad range of U.S. Code violations.

The Office’s Superior Court Division is the largest division, responsible for prosecuting the highest volume of felony and misdemeanor cases in the District of Columbia. Types of cases include:
- Homicides
- Sexual assaults
- Carjackings
- Kidnappings
- Robberies
- Burglary
- Domestic violence
- Narcotics and weapons possession
Applicants must possess advocacy and communication skills; superior writing and analytical skills; the ability to manage a high‑volume docket; and dedication to duty. They will work with attorneys, support staff, investigative agencies, witnesses, and crime victims, maintaining high ethical standards in all interactions.
The Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Career Development Program offers new AUSAs rotational assignments across multiple legal areas over approximately four years, enabling professional growth and increasing responsibilities.
RequirementsResidency: Must reside in the district of appointment or within 25 miles.
Security: Initial appointment requires satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication including fingerprint, credit, tax, and drug testing, with ongoing clearance maintenance.
Selective Service: Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify registration or exemption.
Top Secret Clearance: Required with eligibility for SCI access depending on assignment.
Required Qualifications
- J.D. degree (or equivalent)
- Active bar membership in good standing (any U.S. jurisdiction)
- United States Citizen or National
- Litigation experience and a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Superior communication and advocacy skills
- Excellent research and writing abilities
- Thorough legal and factual analysis
- Ability to work well with others, exercise good judgment, and function independently in a demanding environment
Applicants must meet all qualification requirements upon the announcement closing date. Experience includes paid, unpaid, and volunteer work, such as Peace Corps, Ameri Corps, or other community, professional, philanthropic, religious, or student activities.
EducationApplicants must possess a J.D. degree.
Additional InformationSalary ranges from $84,601 to $195,100 per year, based on experience, with locality pay. Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System.
