PURPOSE STATEMENT:

To provide leadership, supervision, and subject-matter mentorship to junior legal staff and to provide comprehensive legal representation to low-income immigrants. This position has a special focus on Ayuda's Project END program, which supports victims of immigration legal services fraud.

Ayuda is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing direct legal, social and language access services, education, and outreach to low-income immigrants in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Since 1973, Ayuda has provided critical services on a wide range of issues, in the process acquiring nationally recognized expertise in several fields including immigration law, language access, domestic violence and human trafficking.

Ayuda has office locations in Washington, DC, Silver Spring, MD and Fairfax, VA.

WHAT WILL THIS JOB ENTAIL?
  • Supervise immigration staff attorneys and/or senior staff attorneys, BIA accredited representatives, paralegals and/or legal interns.
  • Provide direct legal representation to low-income immigrants in a variety of matters before the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) and the Maryland courts, with a focus on serving asylum seekers, immigrant survivors of crime and vulnerable children and youth, especially for protections under U & T visas, VAWA and SIJS.
  • Represent and advocate for Project END clients by liaising with law enforcement; filing civil, consumer, bar, and UPL complaints; requesting and reviewing clients' immigration files; and applying for forms of immigration relief;
  • Where necessary, advocate on behalf of clients who have been victims of crimes, including human trafficking, in interactions with law enforcement.
  • Deliver trainings and presentations on survivor-based immigration protections to stakeholders including the community, service providers and law enforcement
  • Represent Ayuda and our clients at local and regional stakeholder, coalition, and advocacy meetings.
  • Stay current on relevant laws and policies by attending trainings and conferences and reviewing new laws, regulations, and court rules.
  • Assist with preparation of grant applications, grant administration, and reports.
Requirements

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU CAN DO THIS JOB?

Eligibility Requirements :

Must be legally able to work in the United States and maintain proper work authorization throughout employment.

Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position presented in a general office environment.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. or LL.M. from accredited law school required;
  • Member in good standing with the DC, Maryland, or Virginia bar, or eligible to waive into one of these jurisdictions, strongly preferred;
  • Fluency in Spanish or another language relevant to Ayuda's client community;
  • At least three years' experience practicing immigration law and/or consumer law. Candidates with less experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis;
  • Strong legal, organizational and time-management skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team;
  • Experience working with children or survivors of family violence, domestic violence, sexual assault or other trauma a plus;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social, racial and economic justice; and
  • Experience supervising attorneys, paralegals, BIA accredited representatives, legal assistants, and/or legal interns preferred, but not required.
SALARY AND BENEFITS :

This position is a term-limited, at-will position through April 2027 to work on a specific grant-funded project, with the possibility of renewal based on funding.

The anticipated salary for this position is $90,000-$106,300 depending on experience. For example, a supervising attorney with 2 years of relevant supervisory experience would receive a salary of $94,800.
