Role Summary
Leidos is seeking a mid-level Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Engineer to support production cloud environments and cloud migration initiatives for a Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). This role focuses on hands-on cloud engineering
, including GCP administration, automation, infrastructure as code, system integration, and application support.
The position emphasizes real-world operational experience over certifications and requires independent execution with meaningful impact on project deliverables. The engineer will collaborate closely with internal teams, support end-to-end cloud solutions, and contribute to modernization and migration efforts.
Key Responsibilities- Administer and support GCP organizations, folders, projects, and billing
- Manage IAM roles, service accounts, and access controls using least-privilege principles
- Configure and maintain VPC networks, firewall rules, VPNs, and hybrid connectivity
- Monitor platform health using Cloud Monitoring, Logging, and Alerting
- Troubleshoot production issues and perform root-cause analysis
- Support development, test, staging, and production environments
- Design, deploy, and maintain infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC):
- Terraform (preferred)
- Deployment Manager (where applicable)
- Automate operational and lifecycle tasks using:
- Cloud Functions
- Cloud Run
- Workflows
- Cloud Scheduler
- Develop and maintain scripts using Python and/or shell scripting
- Reduce manual effort through standardization and automation
- Support on-premises to GCP and cloud-to-cloud migrations (AWS/Azure to GCP)
- Assist with migration planning, execution, and workload dependency analysis
- Support data, application, and infrastructure migrations
- Participate in cutovers, post-migration stabilization, and optimization
- Help modernize legacy workloads into cloud-native or hybrid architectures
- Integrate GCP services with enterprise systems, including:
- Identity platforms (Google Workspace, Active Directory, SSO)
- CI/CD pipelines and automation tools
- SaaS and internal applications
- Support API-based and event-driven integrations using REST and Pub/Sub
- Collaborate with security, networking, and application teams
- Support hybrid and multi-cloud integration patterns
- Support applications deployed on:
- Compute Engine
- GKE
- Cloud Run
- App Engine
- Assist development teams with environment provisioning and deployment pipelines
- Perform performance, reliability, scalability, security, and cost reviews of cloud architectures
- 3–6 years of hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform in production environments
- Proven experience administering and supporting GCP services, including:
- IAM
- VPC
- Compute Engine
- Cloud Storage
- Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting
- Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code and automation
- Experience supporting cloud migration initiatives (on-prem → cloud and/or cloud → cloud)
- Proficiency in Python and/or shell scripting
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and documentation skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating across technical teams
- Experience with GKE (Kubernetes) or containerized workloads
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Cloud Build, Git Hub Actions, Jenkins, etc.)
- Experience with data engineering concepts on database platforms
- Experience supporting enterprise identity integrations
- Familiarity with cloud security best practices
- Google Cloud certifications (Associate or Professional) — optional
- Experience with data and analytics platforms:
- Big Query
- Cloud Storage
- Pub/Sub
- Dataflow
- BS or MS in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related discipline
- Typically:
- BS with 4–8 years of relevant experience or
- MS with 2–6 years of relevant experience
- Active Public Trust and/or DOT onboarding is a strong plus
- Must be eligible to obtain Public Trust clearance
- 5 days per week onsite in Washington, DC
