The System Administrator II is responsible for managing a variety of systems administration work such as infrastructure, application, storage, network, backup management, user support, and production/development environments. The role supports Unix/macOS/Linux, Microsoft, and AWS environments, providing user and production support, managing storage arrays, network file systems, routing, and virtual environments. The incumbent plans, maintains, and operates enterprise cloud infrastructure and works with moderate supervision from the Engineering Manager and other System Administrators.
Responsibilities- Maintain and implement procedures that meet all cybersecurity requirements of the organization.
- Identify shared project needs and provide appropriate infrastructure solutions.
- Participate in IT strategy, planning, and operational reviews.
- Plan and budget for current and upcoming program IT needs, including research of appropriate software, hardware, and resources.
- Perform network engineering tasks, including support for DNS, LDAP, NTP, routers, switches, firewalls, remote access, and wireless access.
- Standardize IT systems across all departments.
- Monitor and maintain on‑prem and cloud IT systems, including the physical environment, Internet connectivity, and expansion planning.
- Oversee and provide IT equipment needs for the organization, supporting workshops, committee meetings, and colloquia.
- Maintain a documentation system for the organization.
- Lead the System Administration help desk team to ensure user needs are met.
- Deploy and maintain user laptops.
- Manage backups.
- Maintain standard applications such as Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Jamf Pro, Azure/Entra , performing daytoday maintenance and user support.
- Support commercialization efforts as needed.
- Encourage and mentor less experienced System Administrators on IT security practices, policies, and equipment installation/maintenance.
- Support application and service management, including deployment, maintenance, and retirement.
- Stay current on hardware and procurement tasks with IT suppliers.
- Participate in evaluation trials and vendor presentations to provide feedback and recommendations for future IT purchases.
- Continuously learn new skills, best practices, and technologies and apply them to projects.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with stakeholders and team members.
- PhD degree in geoscience, computer science, physical science, engineering, or a related field.
- OR Master’s degree in a related field AND one (1) year of relevant experience.
- OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field AND two (2) years of relevant experience.
- OR Four (4) years of relevant experience.
- Understanding of earth sciences and the earth science community.
- Great customer service skills.
- Experience writing scripts to automate repetitive system administration functions.
- Experience configuring, maintaining, and installing system monitoring software.
- Knowledge of remote computer and mobile device management systems.
- Experience with multiple cloud‑native platforms including AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure/Entra .
- Ability to work independently and on a team.
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to gather, analyze, and interpret data.
- Ability to make moderate‑impact decisions.
