The PFAC and PFA Engagement Specialist will provide leadership and support, from a family's perspective, in the educational and programmatic activities that promotes and implements Patient and Family Centered Care. They will work to advance Patient and Family Centered Care throughout the organization as specified by the Manager Patient and Family Centered Care and to formally coordinate ways in which patients and family members can contribute to the mission and values of the organization.

Minimum Education

Bachelor s Degree OR equivalent work/life experience with additional educational preparation (Required)

Functional Accountabilities

Communication & Relations

  • Assist with the planning and facilitation of the Children’s National Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) meetings through scheduling, initiating agendas and distributing essential documents in a timely manner. Partnering with the PFAC Executive Board and Children’s National staff to ensure meetings run professionally. Attend monthly PFAC meetings. Assist with overall function of the Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC).
  • Recruit and interview candidates for Patient and Family Advisory Council as needed. Assist with planning and orientation of new Family Advisory Council members.
  • Assist with matching family members to hospital wide committees and programs as requested by the organization.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining open communication with the PFACs, Family Advisors and Family Faculty soliciting feedback and assessing ongoing needs.
  • Assist in developing and managing family centered care activities on the units or in the clinics wherein families will have the opportunity to learn about the hospital and connect with other family members who have similar experiences.
  • Membership on designated committees with the purpose of bringing a patient/family voice and perspective.
  • Assist with the enhancements of the Patient and Family Centered Care initiatives throughout the medical center.
  • Work collaboratively with Children’s National departments to promote and support Patient and Family Centered Care. Assist, when requested, with the design, implementation and evaluation of services, programs or systems that enhance services to families by being a voice for the patient and family perspective.
  • Participating in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and providing input to department discussions.
  • Serve as on-site resource for families and staff.

  • Actively participate as a front-line example of extra-ordinary customer services and satisfaction. Participate in customer service/patient satisfaction initiatives that are appropriate.
  • Maintain currency in the field through continuing education. Participate in establishing job requirements and goals, perform duties at the desired level of competency.
  • Ensure work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment for employees, patients and families. Must be compliant at all times with hospital guidelines, requirements, protocols, policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.
