Position: Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) - PRN (as-needed) - Child Protection Center

Overview

All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children s National Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Professional Model of Care requires registered professional nurses to be responsible and accountable for their own practice. The SANE will participate as a member of the sexual abuse/assault response team to provide victims of sexual assault with sensitive, coordinated and appropriate care.

The RN will provide the forensic medical exam (per established protocol) in all reported cases of sexual assault/abuse that occurred within a 72 hour period committed in the District of Columbia. Will participate in a 12 hour, 7 day a week on-call schedule and will testify as required when subpoenaed.

Minimum Education

Bachelor s Degree Nursing (Required)

Successful completion of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Course (Required)

Minimum Work Experience

2 years Nursing experience (Preferred)

Successful completion of orientation onstrates sensitivity to diverse cultural backgrounds. Demonstrates two way communications within the team.

Functional Accountabilities

Nursing Process

  • Gather Physical and Psychosocial data on patient/family.
  • Contribute to the individualized plan of care and execute a plan to utilize resources as needed.
  • Identify the need for discharge planning using the multidisciplinary team.
  • Complete documentation based on hospital standards.
  • Utilize verbal and non-verbal communication with patient/families and all members of the healthcare team.
  • Recognize and seek help with conflict situations.
Quality Improvement
  • Participate in unit-based quality improvement activities.
  • Identify performance improvement opportunities.
Leadership
  • Develop organizational and prioritization skills necessary to complete assignments within acceptable time frame.
  • Support unit management decisions and contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Take responsibility for learning policies and standards.
  • Provide court testimony on sexual assault cases.
  • Participate in community outreach training on issues of child sexual abuse/assault
Professional Development
  • Identify own learning needs and seek opportunities to meet those needs.
  • Participate in bi-monthly SANE photo review meetings.
Professional Practice/Research
  • Participate in Shared Leadership.
  • Contribute to Children’s National’s MAGNET Journey .
  • Ensure nursing practice is based on evidence of best practice.
  • Accountable to participate in the Division of Nursing’s Performance Improvement process (division or unit level).
