Summary:
The GW Student Health Center ( SHC ) at the George Washington University (GW) is a multidisciplinary, integrated, student healthcare service that provides confidential, student-centered care in an accessible, safe, culturally sensitive, and supportive environment. The SHC seeks to promote healthy lifestyle choices and to holistically support the physical and emotional well-being of students in order to achieve academic success.
The Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for clinic operations and direct patient care as described below.
- Responsible for clinic patient flow. Monitor for patient’s arrival, accompany and/or assist patient into the exam room in a friendly and professional manner. Inform medical provider of patient’s arrival and room assignment.
- Obtain patient vital signs, including height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, pulse oximetry, visual acuity and orthostatic blood pressures.
- Transcribe vital signs to Point and Click (PnC), the electronic medical record, correctly and in a timely fashion.
- Perform a variety of diagnostic CLIA waived testing and screening procedures such as rapid strep testing, flu testing, COVID/Flu testing, urinalysis and urine culture, urine pregnancy testing, throat culture, GC/CT throat, GC/CT urine, and maintain a COVID and Flu Log. Enter point of care lab results into PnC.
- Assist medical providers during examinations and procedures as needed (e.g., suturing, wound care, IV fluids) and assist in explaining test procedures to patients.
- Order titers and Quantiferon Gold testing for nurses.
- Administer medications (oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, inhalation, topical) using proper technique.
- Restock, clean and prepare the medical exam rooms and SHC lab; restock the bathroom and perform light cleaning as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum QualificationsQualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Licensure / Certifications- Current basic CPR / AED
- Medical Assistant Certification
- Education:
High school graduate;
Certification and Registration as a Medical Assistant.
- 6 months + experience in a primary care setting preferred (i.e., hospital, physician’s office, or ambulatory care setting).
