Patient Care Tech

Overview

Med Star Health is looking for a Patient Care Technician to join our team at Med Star Washington Hospital Center within our Med Surg Unit. As a Patient Care Technician, you will function as a member of the patient-centered care team to provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or medical staff/providers. You will assist nursing and medical staff with procedures and/or tests, and aid patients with activities of daily living (ADLs).

You will perform specific care activities such as specimen collection, phlebotomy, intravenous (IV) catheter insertion, electrocardiography (EKG), and documentation in the health record.

• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and personal hygiene, including bathing, mouth care, dressing, skin care, positioning, feeding, ambulation, toileting, and range of motion activities.
• Assist with patient mobilization and rehabilitation, use of crutches and walkers, and transfer/transport of patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.
• Collect specimens; perform venipuncture/phlebotomy; obtain EKGs; apply electrodes and initiate physiologic monitoring equipment; insert IV catheters and manage IV sites and dressings; conduct routine inspection of IV sites.
• Measure and document patient intake and output; accurately record vital signs, height and weight, pulse oximetry, point-of-care and waived testing, and other pertinent information in the health record.
• Perform routine treatments/activities per unit/hospital policy, including Foley catheter care, suctioning, simple dressing changes, wound care, turning and positioning, postmortem care, and transportation of the body to the morgue; maintain drainage tubes and oxygen equipment; assist with traction, casts, splints, slings, TED/SCD supports, and other immobilization equipment.
• Maintain patient comfort, confidentiality, and dignity; perform observation duties (including 1:1 observation) and apply restraints as needed; prepare patients to be seen by providers; assist providers and registered nurses in examinations and procedures.
• Round on assigned patients; communicate changes in patient condition to the nurse and care team; ensure complete handoff at shift change; initiate and assist in CPR.
• Participate in patient/family teaching and respond to questions; attend staff meetings and multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
• Maintain cleanliness and safety of the patient environment; assist with environmental services support (linen management, trash removal, room cleaning); transport and escort patients during discharges, transfers, and appointments; complete errands such as delivering specimens and stocking equipment and supplies.

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant program with active CNA certification, or equivalent experience; or completion of a national Registered Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic program/course with at least six months of EMT/CCT/EMTP experience; or nursing student (RN program) with at least one year of clinical rotation or a graduate of an approved nursing program (LPN or RN).
• BLS - Basic Life Support.

This position has a hiring range of USD $19.93 - USD $29.98 /Hr.
