The Medical Technologist Flow Cytometry is a laboratory professional who performs complex tests using specialized instruments to analyze cells and particles for clinical diagnostics or research purposes. They are crucial in fields like immunology, hematology, and oncology. They maintain, troubleshoot, and backup flow cytometry instrumentation, including daily, weekly, and monthly checks. Ensure all quality metrics and controls are within the established ranges.

Assist pathologists in the analysis of flow cytometry data. Ensure reagents and other supplies are organized and viable. Assist manager and pathologists with validations as needed. Aide in the collection of bone marrow specimens. Communicate results, instrument problems, and equipment malfunctions in an accurate and timely manner. Support team members and train new technologists. This position requires the technologist to be available for emergency cases one or two weekends per month.

Minimum Education

Minimum Education: Bachelor s Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent related field of science to meet the CLIA 88 requirements (Required)

Work Experience:

1 year Experience in an accredited clinical laboratory working in Flow Cytometry (Required)

Preferred Experience: 3 years Experience in an accredited clinical laboratory (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Math Ability Level: Statistics preferred.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills important
  • Knowledge and skills related to FACS CANTO II Instrument, FCS Express, and sample quality assessments.
Required Licenses and Certifications
  • Medical Technologist (MT) Registry or eligible as MT (ASCP) (Preferred)
Functional Accountabilities
  • Technical Performance
    • Perform routine technical procedures as assigned following standard operating procedures.
    • Perform tests accurately in an organized and efficient manner.
    • Keep up-to-date with new flow cytometry tests and instrumentation.
    • Has in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in own discipline and basic knowledge of related disciplines. Solves complex problems. Works independently; receives minimal guidance.
    • May lead projects or project steps within a broader project or may have accountability for ongoing activities or objectives. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
    • Demonstrate competence in assigned areas.
    • Preparing and staining biological samples, such as blood, bone marrow, or tissue, for analysis.
    • Training new staff members, students, or researchers on laboratory procedures and equipment use
Test Results
  • Report tests accurately in writing, orally and/or in the LIS; demonstrate knowledge of LIS.
  • Follow established guidelines for reporting STAT results and critical values, properly documenting calls and communicating with assigned pathologists.
  • Perform primary data analysis of flow cytometry dot blots.
  • Review testing logs and complete tests within shift.
  • Other duties as assigned
Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting
  • Perform equipment and instrument maintenance according to protocols.
  • Follow recommended manufacturer s and/or department defined instrument performance checks and calibrations prior to testing.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve basic instrument malfunctions following written guidelines
  • Make adjustments or minor repairs with the aid of instrument manuals or technical service by telephone.
  • Assist Medical Lab Technician in resolving problems.
  • Monitor supply inventories in assigned areas to assure adequate availability; receive and stock supplies.
  • Acquiring data from the instruments and analyzing the results using specialized software. This includes fine-tuning gating techniques to distinguish between normal and abnormal cell populations.
Quality Control
  • Perform, evaluate and report QC protocol; identify and resolve QC failures; document resolutions.
  • Assist MLT and Lab Assistants with unresolved problems.
  • Perform competency and proficiency challenges in a timely manner
  • Responsible for efficient and cost effective use of supplies and reagents
  • Ensuring all activities comply with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission).
Staff Training
  • Assist in training of new employees
  • Serve as a technical resource for Medical Lab Technicians and Laboratory Associates
  • Write and update procedures as assigned
Safety
  • Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance
  • Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation
  • Stop in the face of uncertainty and takes time to resolve the situation
  • Demonstrate accurate, clear and timely verbal and written communication
  • Actively promote safety for patients, families, visitors and co-workers
  • Attend carefully to important details - practicing Stop, Think, Act and Review in order to self-check behavior and performance
