Within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, the nation's largest health faculty, the Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health plays a pivotal role in bridging scientific discovery and clinical application. Located at The Alfred Precinct in Melbourne, the Sub-Faculty integrates research, teaching, and patient care, and encompasses both the School of Translational Medicine and the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
Its mission is to accelerate the pathway from discovery to real-world impact through translational research, clinical trials, and public and population health strategies.
The School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine is one of the largest and most comprehensive schools of public health in the Asia Pacific region. Located within the Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health, the School is centred at Monashs Alfred Hospital campus, with strong partnerships embedded across Monash-affiliated hospitals, research institutes and public health organisations.
The School brings together leading expertise across epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical trials, health systems and policy, implementation science, health economics, genomics, qualitative research and population health. Through generating and synthesising impactful evidence, strengthening health systems and informing policy and practice, the School is committed to improving health and wellbeing for all people and communities.
Role OverviewThis is a rare and senior leadership opportunity to shape the strategic direction, performance and impact of one of Australias leading schools of public health.
As Professor and Head of School, you will provide intellectual, strategic and operational leadership across research, education and engagement. You will lead the Schools vision and priorities, enhance its national and international standing, and foster a collaborative, high-performing academic culture aligned with the Faculty and Universitys strategic objectives.
Reporting to the Dean, Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health, you will work closely with Faculty and University leadership, government, industry, health services and international partners to strengthen research translation, policy impact and educational excellence. The role carries responsibility for a large and diverse academic workforce, significant financial resources, and an extensive portfolio of partnerships and programs.
Key ResponsibilitiesAs Head of School, you will:
Provide strategic leadership to advance the Schools research, education and engagement mission. Develop and articulate a shared vision aligned with Faculty and University priorities. Lead academic planning, resource allocation and operational performance across the School. Strengthen the Schools national and international reputation in public health and preventive medicine. Foster a high-performance, inclusive and supportive culture for staff and students. Build and sustain strategic partnerships with government, industry, health services and global collaborators.
Contribute actively to Sub-Faculty and Faculty-wide initiatives and leadership.
As a Professor, you will:
Maintain an active and internationally recognised research profile aligned with the Facultys research strategy. Provide academic leadership in teaching, curriculum development and research training. Mentor and support early and mid-career researchers and higher degree research students. Contribute to policy development and public health impact at national and international levels.
About You
- A doctoral qualification (or equivalent standing) in a discipline relevant to public health or preventive medicine. International recognition as a leading authority in public health, preventive medicine or a related field. A distinguished record of scholarly excellence, including high-impact publications and sustained research productivity. Demonstrated success in securing competitive research funding and building research programs. Significant leadership experience within complex academic, research or health organisations.
