Job Description Summary

The GW Student Health Center (SHC) at George Washington University provides confidential, student-centered care in a safe, culturally sensitive environment. The Certified Medical Assistant supports students’ physical and emotional well‑being to promote academic success.

Responsibilities
  • Manage clinic patient flow: monitor arrival, escort patients to exam rooms, and inform providers of patient location.
  • Obtain and record vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, pulse oximetry, visual acuity, orthostatic blood pressures).
  • Transcribe vital signs to Point and Click (PnC) electronic medical record accurately and promptly.
  • Perform CLIA‑waived diagnostic testing and screening:
    • Rapid strep testing
    • Flu testing
    • COVID/Flu testing
    • Monospot testing
    • Urinalysis and urine culture
    • Urine pregnancy testing
  • Collect laboratory specimens:
    • Throat culture
    • Urine culture
    • GC/CT throat
    • GC/CT urine
  • Maintain COVID and flu logs and enter point‑of‑care lab results into PnC.
  • Assist providers with examinations and procedures:
    • Ear lavage
    • Fluorescein eye exams
    • Suturing
    • Wound care
    • IV fluids
  • Administer intramuscular injections and other medications (oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, inhalation, topical) using proper technique.
  • Order titers and Quantiferon Gold testing for nurses.
  • Explain test procedures to patients and assist with specimen collection.
  • Restock, clean, and prepare exam rooms, the SHC lab, and the bathroom. Light cleaning may be occasionally required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field, conferred by the start date.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be substituted.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensure
    • Current basic CPR/AED
    • Medical Assistant certification
  • Education
    • High school graduate
    • Certification and registration as a Medical Assistant
  • Experience
    • At least 6 months in a primary‑care setting (hospital, physician’s office, or ambulatory care).
