Job Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for decontamination, preparation, sterilization, maintenance, and distribution of sterilized instruments and medical equipment. The role also includes managing sterile supplies, maintaining equipment knowledge, and overseeing the instrument repair process.

Responsibilities
  • Decontaminate and sterilize instruments and equipment; assemble, wrap (as applicable), and sterilize trays of instruments, scopes, and other medical equipment.
  • Monitor biological and chemical solutions to ensure consistent and quality decontamination.
  • Make instruments, scopes, and equipment available to end users on schedule.
  • Coordinate instrument, scope, and equipment needs with the Operating Room, Clinics, and other end users.
  • Work with Materials Management to maintain par levels and submit requisitions.
  • Verify that sterilization, washing, and decontamination equipment functions properly.
  • Maintain sterilization records as per department protocol.
  • Assist with tracking repairs and maintenance of instruments.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
  • Qualifications
    • Minimum two (2) years of experience as an instrument processing technician in an ambulatory surgery setting (waived for current KP Coalition employees).
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Registered Central Service Technician Certificate or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Certification within 6 months of hire.
    • Understanding of aseptic techniques and sterilization methods.
    • Proficiency in applicable computer software.
    • Knowledge of AAMI standards and regulations.
    • Effective interpersonal and communication skills; ability to stand, walk, bend, lift at least 50 pounds, hear, speak, and see.
    • Ability to work effectively in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Hospital setting experience.
    • Completion of central supply technology course.
