Associate Director of Federal Government Relations

Under the direction of the Vice Chancellor for Community and Government Relations and the Vice President of Government Relations for UCSF Health, the Associate Director of Federal Relations oversees planning and implementing UCSF’s federal relations activities related to its health and education missions, including immigration, civil rights, workforce, and DOJ and Congressional investigations.

Based in Washington, D.C., the Associate Director functions as the liaison advancing UCSF’s priorities with members of Congress, their staff, executive branch agencies, and other federal organizations. Responsibilities include developing advocacy strategies, building relationships with federal stakeholders, collaborating with the UC Office of the President and UCSF leadership, and mitigating actions that could adversely affect UCSF.

The position plans, develops, and implements outreach strategies, advances policy positions, and partners with peer organizations and trade associations to advance mutual priorities.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 5+ years of related work experience
  • Advanced knowledge of building and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external constituencies
  • Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Active listening, analytical, and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to recognize and address policy and regulatory issues
  • Advanced knowledge of the legislative process, budget, and appropriations
  • Skills to interpret and respond to pending legislation and to write position statements and draft proposed legislation
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in planning and executing federal programs on federal level
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least five years of related work experience with Congress or the Executive Branch
  • Ability to work autonomously without daily supervision
  • Advanced knowledge of UCSF’s vision, mission, and operations
  • Knowledge of policy and regulatory issues impacting higher education and health professions training and familiarity with third‑party organizations advocating on science policy issues
  • Advanced project management skills, including planning and implementing events with federal stakeholders
Salary Range

Annual salary range: $87,900 - $187,700 (subject to additional approvals)
