Senior Accountant (Federal & state tax experience)
Location: Washington, DC (Remote – must be located in the DC/MD/VA tristate area)
Salary Range: $130,000 – $150,000 (commensurate with experience)
Position SummaryThe Senior Accountant will be responsible for managing the company’s accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance, with a strong focus on federal and state tax matters. This role will serve as the primary financial steward of the organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting while supporting strategic decision-making - reporting into and learning from the CFO. This is an exciting opportunity for someone wanting to work in a fast-paced business and have the potential to progress within the firm over time.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Manage federal, state, and local tax compliance, including income, payroll, and sales/use taxes
- Coordinate and prepare tax filings; work with external CPAs and tax advisors as needed
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
- Build out and maintain internal controls and accounting policies
- Support audits, reviews, and financial due diligence as required
- Provide financial analysis and insights to senior leadership to support business decisions
- Improve and streamline accounting processes and systems as the company grows
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred)
- Years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a Controller or senior accounting role
- Demonstrated experience with federal and state tax compliance and reporting
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience working in a small or mid-sized business environment
- Proficiency with accounting software and Excel (experience with cloud-based systems a plus)
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with leadership
- Remote position with flexibility
- Must be located in the Washington, DC / Maryland / Virginia tristate area to support occasional in-person and project based meetings as needed
- Competitive salary range of $130,000 – $150,000
