National - Indirect Excise Tax Manager - Open Location FY23. Our National Tax and EY EDGE practice provides specialized tax technical services to US and global clients. EDGE stands for Exceptional Delivery and Growth Engine, operating in a technical environment with deep process and service delivery experience that distinguishes EY in the marketplace.

This position supports excise tax compliance and advisory projects for clients across industries including Oil & Gas, Transportation, Manufacturing and Retail. The compliance role covers US Federal and State excise tax filings, including fuel tax obligations. The advisory support includes due diligence reviews, structuring assistance, licensing research and consultation, controversy support, interpretation of new legislation, and reviewing related correspondence (e.g., memos, ruling requests) prepared by junior staff.

Examples include air transportation excise tax, alcohol and tobacco excise tax, the PCORI fee, Superfund excise tax, and firearms/ammunition excise tax. This position also involves coaching and developing team members.

Your Key Responsibilities
You’ll work on a diverse array of projects, supporting client engagements through day-to-day collaboration with team members, delivering high-quality work and meeting deadlines. You’ll provide lead compliance support to the engagement team, supervise & evaluate assigned seniors & analysts, communicate with clients, offer tax technical recommendations and resolve engagement issues. You’ll thrive in a collaborative culture where information is shared openly.

  • Demonstrate an effective understanding of excise tax concepts and apply tax knowledge to client situations
  • Support your team in developing and delivering quality tax planning approaches with timely and responsive services and work products that meet or exceed client expectations
  • Assist in identifying and engaging clients in opportunities for excise tax compliance, planning, and other special services
  • Prepare quality, practical approaches to the client's tax situation and arrive at appropriate conclusions
  • Develop recommendations and implementation plans and make informed decisions in complex and judgmental areas
  • Build technical competence by keeping up to date on trends, developments and legislation that impact our clients
  • Research advanced and complex tax issues and develop practical and effective solutions

Administrative Function

  • Lead and coach team members in managing engagement lifecycle and engagement economics for the practice
  • Responsible for financial and economic health of managed engagement

  • Ability to lead client discussions, monitor commitments and deadlines, and drive internal team to completion
  • Collaborate with clients and colleagues to analyze tax issues, determine alternative problem-solving approaches and provide recommendations
  • Support the compliance team with data analysis and benchmarking for compliance and tax calculations
  • Apply independent and objective decision making related to tasks performed
  • Know when to ask questions or proceed further with the task at hand
  • Receive direction from more senior team members
  • Ability to analyze federal and state statutes and related regulations and apply to current facts to reach conclusions and communicate them effectively
