Senior Director, Grant Management and Financial Planning
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), this senior position oversees the financial stewardship and compliance of a complex, multi‑million‑dollar grants portfolio and leads the organization’s annual and long‑term budgeting process. The role serves as a key financial partner to leadership and staff across the entire organization.
Essential Functions Grant Management & Compliance (45%)- Leads the financial management and administration for CAFB’s grants portfolio, including federal funding, foundation, corporate, and individual awards.
- Ensures excellence in award management and strict compliance with all grant terms, conditions, and regulations, particularly for complex government contracts.
- Serves as a primary financial point of contact for government funding agencies, building and maintaining strong working relationships.
- Develops and maintains robust systems for efficient financial management of grants, including timely recordation of expenses (cash and in‑kind), accurate financial reporting, and efficient close‑out processes.
- Partners closely with program managers to ensure seamless grant implementation by developing and disseminating clear tools, templates, and guidelines for the entire award lifecycle.
- Manages and mentors a team of two grant management professionals, with the autonomy to structure the team to meet organizational needs.
- Collaborates with the Development team on proposal budgets and financial reporting to private funders.
- In partnership with the CFO, directs the systems, tools, and processes for managing the organization’s annual operating budget and long‑term financial planning.
- Serves as the primary liaison and financial guide for department leaders throughout the full‑cycle budget process.
- Leads the annual budget process, ensuring a collaborative and transparent approach that aligns with strategic priorities.
- Continuously monitors organizational and departmental budget performance, providing program leaders with actionable insights and analyses.
- Identifies and analyzes budget variances, helping align resources, address gaps, and provide strategic recommendations to the CFO and executive team.
- Drives continuous improvement of budget and grant management systems and processes to increase efficiency and accuracy.
- Evaluates and enhances workflows related to grant and budget management.
- Develops and maintains an organizational budget management system.
- Designs budget templates and financial reporting tools.
- Develops, enhances, and maintains financial dashboards for stakeholders.
- Identifies opportunities for automation and leverages technology to streamline reporting and analysis.
- In partnership with IT and Analytics, delivers dynamic financial scenarios, predictive modeling, and other advanced data use cases to inform improved financial or operational performance.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 10–15 years progressive experience in finance or accounting.
- Significant, direct experience managing financial and compliance aspects of large, complex, highly regulated grants; preference for federal pass‑through funding.
- Experience managing a full‑cycle organizational budget for an organization of comparable size and complexity ($50+ million annual budget).
- Deep understanding of nonprofit financial management principles and managing restricted and unrestricted funding streams.
- Experience overseeing grant compliance under federal award regulations (Uniform Guidance).
- Excellent organizational skills, technical aptitude, and very high proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience using data visualization and BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker) connected to data warehouses (Microsoft Fabric, Google Big Query, Snowflake).
- Functional literacy in SQL or similar code‑based tools to analyze and prepare large datasets; confidence in working “under the hood.”
- Proven ability to manage and mentor staff.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, high emotional intelligence, and proven negotiation and collaboration skills.
