Job Purpose

The Senior Accounting Manager is a vital member of the finance team. The position is responsible for accounting, financial reporting, analysis, and records management. This role reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain daily accounting tasks such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, billings, payroll approval, payroll journal entries, bank reconciliations, general ledger account reconciliations, fixed assets, and depreciation schedules.
  • Perform weekly reviews to verify accuracy of all AP, journal entries, and donation activities.
  • Perform and maintain accurate monthly reconciliations for all cash and investment statements.
  • Perform month and year‑end closing procedures.
  • Support budget, forecast, and financial results creation and oversight.
  • Ensure proper segregation of duties, internal controls, and documented processes.
  • Leverage financial technology and ERP systems to streamline operations and enhance data integrity.
  • Assess and suggest enhancements to financial systems for operational efficiency and reporting accuracy.
  • Assist in preparing management materials for collective bargaining agreements, grievances, and arbitration, while maintaining confidentiality regarding union activities.
  • Collaborate with IT and other departments for smooth integration between accounting and operational systems.
  • Ensure 1099 tax forms are sent on time as required by the IRS.
  • Support the CFO with the annual audit process with external auditors.
  • Foster a collaborative finance culture by working cross‑functionally with other departments.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.
Qualifications
  • Must understand GAAP and ensure compliance with financial regulations.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance is preferred.
  • Minimum 4‑5 years of nonprofit financial accounting experience.
  • Experience in grant accounting, management, or administration is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing financial compliance and internal controls.
  • Proficiency in Sage Intacct, Ramp, and
  • Strong knowledge of financial statement presentation.
  • Experience with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) financial structures is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with cross‑functional teams and provide financial partnership.
  • High integrity and discretion in managing confidential financial information.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, rapidly growing organization that requires flexibility across strategic, operational, and tactical levels.
  • Deep alignment and commitment to criminal justice reform.
Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary range: $92,500‑$102,556.

Work Environment

Geographic

Location:

Washington, DC area. Work Arrangement:
Hybrid. Occasional in‑person office as needed. Typical setting:
Regular computer use and communication. Travel may be required by car, train, or plane; approximately one to four times per year for staff retreats and meetings.

Schedule
  • Full‑time.
  • Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
