Education
- Bachelor s Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Engineering, Industrial, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or safety-related discipline
- In lieu of a Bachelor s degree an additional four (4) years of experience in occupational safety duties, including administering/managing occupational safety programs, application of occupational safety and health regulations and standards, conducting worksite assessments or audits to determine regulatory compliance, assessing potential hazards and controls, providing hazard mitigation recommendations based on regulations and/or best safety practices, and/or assisting in investigating occupational safety related incidents may be considered.
- In occupational safety program administration, auditing, inspecting or compliance administration experience, in addition to the experience stated below (Experience Section).
Experience
- A minimum of four (4) years of occupational safety duties, including administering/managing occupational safety programs (such as Fall Protection, Electrical Safety, Hazard Communication, Confined Space Entry, Job Hazard Analysis, Machine Guarding, Heavy Equipment, Material Handling, Lockout Tagout, Bloodborne Pathogens, Personal Protective Equipment, and/or Powered Industrial Trucks), application of occupational safety and health regulations and standards (such as US Occupational Health and Safety Administration, American National Standards Institute, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), conducting worksite assessments or audits to determine regulatory compliance, assessing potential hazards and controls, providing hazard mitigation recommendations based on regulations and/or best safety practices, and/or assisting in investigating occupational safety related incidents.
Certification/Licensure
- Roadway worker protection (RWP), level 2, within 6 months of hire and maintained for the duration of time in job
- Valid Driver s License and maintained for the duration of time in job
Preferred
- Technical Certification/Licenses: ASP (Associate Safety Professional), CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or other equivalent safety certification
- Master s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Engineering, Industrial, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or safety-related discipline

Satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position, if required. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of this position either with or without reasonable accommodations.
Mission Essential Designation
In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.
SummaryThe Occupational Safety and Health Specialist facilitates the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of corporate Occupational Safety and Health programs and training content and serves as an Authority subject matter expert in occupational safety.
