Informed by an abiding commitment to a just society and care for the planet, the Gonzaga Institute for Climate, Water, and the Environment engages in regional capacity building, scholarship, and teaching to promote the flourishing of inland northwest communities, waters, and lands in the face of a changing climate. The Climate Literacy Program Coordinator assists in organizing and running the Climate Literacy Project.

The chief goal of the Climate Literacy Project is to bring about an intergenerational transformation in worldview to nourish equitable human societies within flourishing ecological communities. The program coordinator will assist other Climate Institute staff and partners to create climate education resources, workshops, and learning experiences with a focus on place-based and hope-filled experiential learning to expand the understanding of and response to the climate crisis.

Essential

Functions

65% - Climate Literacy Program Coordination

  • Support Gonzaga University’s goals to advance ecological education in courses, programs and research.
  • Support the Director in recruiting, designing, and delivering the annual faculty professional development workshop.
  • Coordinate with Director and the Gonzaga Center for Lifelong Learning to organize and recruit for joint professional certificate programs such as the Professional Certificate in Climate Action Planning.
  • Communicate effectively with K-12 students, GU students, school district personnel, and GU faculty and staff.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with primarily public-school districts (e.g., Spokane Public Schools) and personnel (Science Coordinator, Principals, Teachers, Coaches).
  • Assist in development of climate literacy outreach curricula and lesson plans with an emphasis on developing inquiry-based or place-based science activities for K-12 students.
  • Recruit participating teachers and school sites.
  • Maintain inventory and work with the Program Assistant to purchase necessary supplies.
  • Coordinate assessments for climate literacy programs and use results of those assessments to improve programming.
  • Develop and maintain climate literacy website to effectively communicate with community partners and participating Gonzaga students.
  • Understand environmental justice and equity issues, particularly relevant to Spokane and the broader Inland Northwest in education and climate issues.

15% - Climate Institute Support

  • Support the activities of the Climate Institute, including event programming.
  • Help develop and maintain Climate Institute website to effectively communicate with community partners and campus partners.
  • Advertise Climate Institute outreach programming.
  • Collect program and Institute data and assist in developing annual reporting internally and for grants.
  • Support additional Institute programs including student projects and faculty research.

10% - Supervising Students

  • Hire, onboard, and supervise student workers.
  • Coordinate the Climate Literacy Fellows program to participate in outreach and coordinate schedules for Fellows with area classrooms.
  • Assign and monitor student work tasks.
  • Coordinate student schedules for office hours and class visits.
  • Oversee work product development, provide feedback, and revise materials.
  • Schedule and facilitate bi-weekly meetings with student employees.
  • Assist in creating student hiring materials and serve on student hiring search committees.
  • Assist in onboarding new student employees and maintain student employee onboarding materials.

Other functions:

  • Work with Climate Institute’s Director to develop systems for tracking and assessing students who participate in Climate Literacy Project programs.
  • Assist Director in finding and applying for grants to fund further program developments
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Educational Requirement
Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Experience

Years Of Related Experience Requirement
1 year
In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education.
