General Information

  • Mentors supervise and provide an enriching and educational experience for a cohort of up to 25 high school students. The ideal applicant is energetic and enthusiastic about academic enrichment and the college experience. Successful Mentors take the initiative to solve problems, communicate with clarity and empathy with students and staff, and maintain strong organizational habits to manage daily responsibilities effectively. This academic support role collaborates with other Mentors, the Assistant Academic Director, and the Academic Director to implement the program.

Programs

  • 1-Week Academies:
    American Politics, Artificial Intelligence, International Relations, Law, Medical, Creative Writing, National Security & Intelligence, Nursing, Washington & the World, Democracy, Peace, & Conflict.
  • 2-Week Academies:
    Sports Industry Management, Entrepreneurship, Forensic Science, Marketing & Personal Branding.
  • 3-Week Academies:
    Medical Immersion, Foreign Policy, Economics Policy, Business & Leadership, Global Business.

Responsibilities

  • Program Development
    :
    Completing online and in-person training; learning about the program subject(s) to understand course material and better support the student experience; assisting in the final planning stages of the program; planning and preparing for discussions sections and team building; working with other Mentors and the Assistant Academic Director (AAD) to develop group hands-on experiences.
  • Program Implementation
    :
    Attending and engaging in all program activities (lectures, guest speakers, discussions, off-site visits); maintaining daily and event attendance records; providing daily academic and classroom support (leading check-ins, discussion sections, reflections, assisting students with assignments/projects); ensuring students are aware of and engaged in daily activities; answering general inquiries about schedules, policies, and procedures.
  • Student Affairs
    :
    Building community and belonging among students and staff; creating a safe and supportive academic environment; working with residential staff to create an inclusive and welcoming environment; enforcing University policies; establishing boundaries in compliance with the Protection of Minors Policy; providing support to students dealing with personal concerns; reflecting with students on learning processes and goals; reporting unsafe or concerning behavior;

    connecting students to campus resources; other duties as assigned.

Schedule

  • Training Part I (Online) | May 18, 2026
  • Training Part II | June 2 – June 4, 2026 or June 16 – 18, 2026
  • Programs in Session | June 8 – August 7, 2026

Work Hours

  • Approximately 40 - 55 hours per week during 1-Week Academies.
  • Approximately 25 - 35 hours per week during 2-Week and 3-Week Academies.
  • Some evening, weekend, and overtime hours may be required once programs begin (not to exceed 20 overtime hours per week).

Terms

  • Mentors are designated for the spring and summer 2026 term with dates of employment from May 18 through August 8, 2026. Mentors will be assigned to work programs for all or portions of this period.
  • Mentors are full-time and precluded from having simultaneous obligations during the designated time commitment.
  • Employment with the University is at will and may be terminated by Mentors or the University at any time without notice or cause. Employment with the University should not be considered as an implied or explicit guarantee of employment or as a personal contract.
  • Failure to meet the standards and expectations of the University, the School of Continuing Studies, and the Office of Summer and Special Programs may result in termination. Mentors forfeit any provided university housing and meal plan once terminated.

Compensation

  • Pay: $18.40 per hour.
  • Housing:
    University housing provided during assigned working weeks and during off-weeks between program assignments.
  • Meals:
    Meal plan provided during assigned working weeks and during off-weeks between program assignments; boxed meals available during off-site visits that overlap with meals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current or graduating undergraduate or graduate student or recently graduated.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Google Suite, and Zoom.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current or graduating GU student.
  • Experience working in an educational setting.
  • Experience working with faculty.
  • Experience working with high school students.
