Brief Description of Duties

The Assistant or Associate Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics in the University of the District of Columbia, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) engages in teaching, research, and service to prepare innovative, evidence‑based nutrition practitioners who become research and community‑engagement leaders, advocating for nutritional status, health, and wellness improvement in diverse and underserved communities.

This position requires the faculty member to:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in medical nutrition therapy, community/public health nutrition, nutrition assessment, counseling/behavior change, and food/nutrition security.
  • Serve as Coordinator for the Nutrition and Dietetics Graduate Program Clerkship, managing contracts and affiliation agreements, organizing student placements, and facilitating communication, orientation, and evaluation for students and preceptors.
  • Publish peer‑reviewed articles in the field of nutrition and dietetics.
  • Initiate, build, and sustain a nationally recognized, innovative research agenda.
  • Engage students in research and community‑oriented activities relevant to the field.
  • Work with students to plan and implement effective leadership development opportunities both in and outside of the classroom.
  • Serve as an advisor or committee member for capstone projects, theses, and dissertations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
  • Employ diverse instructional delivery methods—including online learning, social media, and portfolios—to provide educational content supported by evidence‑based research.
  • Collaborate with the Department Chair, Associate Dean, Program Director, faculty, other academic units, CAUSES land‑grant programs, and DC agencies and service providers.
  • Perform student advisement, hold office hours, and conduct course reviews with appropriate corrective or enhancement actions.
  • Contribute to the land‑grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, program staff, and key community stakeholders.
  • Minimum

    Job Requirements
  • Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DCN, DrPH, EdD) in Nutrition, Food Science, Health Science, Public Health, Organizational Leadership, or a related area.
  • Active status as a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Licensure as a dietitian in the United States and the ability to obtain licensure in DC within one year of hire.
  • Three years of professional practice experience in medical nutrition therapy, community/public health nutrition, and/or food systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated record of teaching, research, program planning, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Associate Professor Appointment Requirements
    • An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate.
    • A record of scholarship and professional growth.
    • At least five (5) years of full‑time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor (community college experience preferred). Appropriate professional experience and achievements may substitute when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.
    Assistant Professor Appointment Requirements
    • An appropriate terminal degree or agreement to complete this degree within a specified time period.
    • At least three (3) years of full‑time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.
    • Appropriate professional experience and achievements may substitute when formal teaching experience is limited or absent; candidates must demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.
