Job Description & How to Apply Below

The Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at The George Washington University (GW) in Washington, DC, invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering to start as early as Fall 2026. This search is open to strong candidates with a systems‑centric research and teaching record in systems engineering or a related field. We are particularly interested in candidates who can support our multi‑disciplinary initiative in Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI), which studies AI in the context of the systems and society in which it is deployed.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Complex system architecture, design, evaluation, and operation, especially related to AI‑enabled systems
  • Test, evaluation, validation, and verification of AI‑enabled systems
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning to support systems engineers in their work
  • Techniques and metrics for designing and evaluating explainable, interpretable, and trustworthy AI‑enabled systems
  • Management, policy, risk, and decision‑making for AI‑enabled systems

New faculty will join a vibrant department with a diverse faculty, housed in a $275 M building that fosters interdisciplinary efforts across multiple fields. The university and department have a strong commitment to recruiting faculty of the highest caliber who have thrived in different environments and would enrich the university with different experiences and perspectives. We are especially interested in faculty who can engage in the AI‑related interdisciplinary efforts already identified as priorities for GW, such as the GW Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Initiative (GWTAI) and the NIST‑NSF Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law and Society (TRAILS).

The George Washington University is the largest academic institution in the nation’s capital. GW offers excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, with faculty, schools, and institutes in diverse areas such as energy and the environment, public health, law, international affairs, public policy, the humanities, and many others. The exceptional location affords the GW community unique cultural and intellectual opportunities. This region offers access to many federal funding agencies, research laboratories, and one of the largest concentrations of technology companies in the nation, supporting high impact research agendas and creating opportunities for professional couples.

Established mechanisms to support close research collaborations with the federal ecosystem include membership in the NIST Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) and the Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC).

Responsibilities

Faculty hired in this position will be expected to build a substantial research program, mentor graduate students in research, and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Minimum Qualifications

By the date of appointment, applicants for the Assistant Professor of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering position must have earned a doctorate in Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related field (including, but not limited to, human factors engineering, computer science, industrial/organizational psychology, industrial engineering, information systems, etc.).
