Summary/
Job Description:
The Honors and Scholars Programs are part of Undergraduate Education & Academic Student Services (UEAS) in American University’s academic affairs area. In addition to educating multiple cohorts of students in specific programs, Honors & Scholars supports undergraduate research through the Summer Scholars and Artists Research Fellowship and the dissemination of undergraduate research support funds, open to all AU undergraduate students. Reporting to the Senior Director of Honors & Scholars Programs, this GA position supports undergraduate research efforts by coordinating across the six undergraduate academic schools and colleges to advertise and promote the various research opportunities available to students.
This position will update the undergraduate research web page, update and maintain the Qualtrics applications and databases, evaluate funding requests, and notify applicants of their status. The GA will also process funding reimbursement requests. In addition, this position will facilitate the selection of Summer Scholars by creating a selection committee of faculty to evaluate applications, assembling application packets for the selection committee to review, serving as a resource to the committee, and coordinating the assignment of research librarians to each summer scholar.
The GA will monitor the progress of the scholars throughout the summer, perform check-ins with faculty mentors, and plan the annual presentation of the summer scholars’ research in the fall semester. The GA will work with the scholars to prepare them for their presentations and coordinate with the library to archive their projects.
- Student advising and mentoring:
Responding to student and faculty inquiries about undergraduate research opportunities and providing feedback on applications. - Evaluation of applications:
Using professional judgment and knowledge of research methods and methodology to make recommendations on funding proposals. - Professional communication:
Coaching students on the public presentation of their research leveraging campus partners in the Center for Professionalism and Communication. - Administration:
Assist with administrative functions as requested, including communication, application development, scheduling, funding disbursements, website development/upkeep, and social media posts. - Assessment:
Assist in the distribution, collection, organization, and analysis of program data. - Coordination with other units:
Coordinate with school and college-based offices that oversee undergraduate research opportunities to ensure equity and continuity in funding requirements and award amounts across the university. - Event planning:
Plan and execute the annual public presentation of the Summer Scholars and Artists research projects and assist with the planning and execution of the annual AU Honors Research Conference.

Apply concepts of student development and learning theory to improve practice. - Leadership:
Work with students, staff, faculty, and community members to envision, plan, and effect change. - Advising and Supporting:
Provide advising and support to individuals and groups, including feedback, guidance, and referrals. - Assessment, Evaluation, and Research:
Design, conduct, critique, and use research methods to inform practice in higher education.
